To all w homjt may concern Be it known that we, GEoRoE F, Korr and JOHN DUNLAP, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to music leaf turners and more particularly to the class of automatic music leaf turners.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner, wherein the sheets of the music can be clamped so as to hold the sheets in reading position, and the same will be successively turned, thatis to say, the cover sheets of the music are fixed in open position, while the intermediate sheet is swung from right to left for the reading of the music on both sides thereof, without requiring the handling of the said music in the usual manner by the fingers of the operator.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a music leaf turner of this character wherein it may be placed upon the music rest of a piano, organ or other like musical instrument, so as to hold the music for the automatic turning of the same.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a music turner of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in operation, strong, durable and inexpensive in manufacture.

'With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1, is a front elevation of a music leaf turner constructed in accordance with. the invention. Fig. 2, is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the music leaf turner comprises a base 5, preferably made from wood, although it may be made from any other suitable material,

illustrated in the accompanying which has mounted thereon an ornamental back frame 6, preferably made from rela tive stiff wire, the same being also fixed to a central post or upright 7, which is secured at its lower end in the base 5, while the upper end thereof is extended above the frame 6, for supporting a manually adjustable or swinging arm 8, the same being formed with a sleeve like hub 9, loosely engaged upon the upper end of the post or upright 7, so that the said arm may be turned from right to left or vice versa, as the occasion may require.

On the arm 8, is mounted a suitable spring held jaw clip 10, for the detachable fastening of a cover sheet of the music thereto, while carried by the frame 6, at opposite sides of the post or upright 7 are resilient finger clips 11, which engage the cover sheets of the music for the holding of the same open and in reading position upon the music turner.

Swingingly connected to the post or upright 7, is a music leaf turning arm 12, which is formed with a hub or sleeve 13, loosely surrounding the said post or upright next to the base 5, and upon the said arm are fastened spring held jaw clips 14, for the detachable fastening of the lower edge of the intermediate sheet or page of the music therein.

The arm 12 has engaged therewith one end of a coiled tension spring 15, which is trained about the post or upright 7, and has its other end fixed thereto, so that on the swinging of the said arm 12 from left to right the spring will become tensioned to automatically move the arm from right to left, when released in the manner hereinafter described.

Secured to the upper face of the base 5, to the right of the post or upright 7, is a normally raised leaf spring 16, which is formed at its free end with an upstanding stop lug or catch 17, for engagement with the arm 12 when shifted to the right of the post or upright 7, for the locking of the said arm in this position until released.

The purpose of the arm 8, with the clip 10, is to hold the front cover sheet of the leaf music, the said arm being disposed at the left of the upright 7, so that the upper edge of the front cover sheet can be secured in the clip 10, while the lower edge thereof is inserted in the clip or hook 11, at the left of said upright, thereby stationarily holding said sheet, and the back cover sheet is engaged in the clip at the right of the up right, so that the page sheet can be fastened to the turning arm 12, for the swinging of said last named sheet from right to left, in the operation of the music leaf turner.

Formed on the spring 16, and depending forwardly of the base 5, therefrom is an operating lever 18, which terminates in a finger engaging key or button 19, so that on depressing the latter the stop lug or catch 17, will be lowered to releasing position for the freeing of the arm 12 which under the tension of the spring 15, is turned from right to left for the swinging of the sheet of music thereby, and in this manner the said sheet is automatically turned.

In the operation of the device, the arm 12, if at the left hand side of the latter is swung to the right and the key 19, is manually de pressed until the said arm 12, has passed the latch 17, whereupon the key 19, is released, thereby permitting the latch 17, to lock the arm 12, at the right hand side of the device. Now, the music is opened and the several leaves thereof are fastened in the clips 10 and 14, on the arms 8 and 12, respectively, the said arm 8, being normally at the left hand side, so that the leaf on this side of the music -will be supported thereby, the said leaf being also engaged at its-lower edge in clip 11, on the frame at the left side, so that it will not swing while the leaf at the right hand side of the device is engaged at its lower edge in the clips 141-, on the arm 12, and will be automatically turned to the left. when the latter is released by depressing the key 19, to unlateh the said arm, which latter is acted upon by the spring 15, the same being tensioned when the said arm is swung to the right.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of the music leaf turner will be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation h'as been omitted, for the sake of brevity.

It is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be made in the invention, such as come properly within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the said invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

What is claimed is:

A music leaf turner comprising a base rail, a vertical upright arranged centrally on the rail, brackets on op posite sides of the upright and fixed to said upright and rail, respectively, a pair of arms having sleeves loosely connected to the upright and disposed in spaced relation to each other, means for tensioning one of the arms to permit antomatic turning thereof, an upwardly inclined leaf spring having one end fixed to the rail, and also having an upstanding latch at its opposite end to project into the path of movement of the arm under tension to lock it when swung to one side of the upright, hook like clips mounted on the brackets in a plane with each other above the path of movement of the tensioned arm for holding the cover sheets of music, and clips on the arms.
