Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1915.
Application f led October S, 1914. Serial No. 865,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Hrniir G. Annnnson,
citizen of the United (States, residing at \Vestchester, in the county of BronX' and State of New York, and JAMns Garrnnr, citizen of the United States, residing at Roselle, in the county of. Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Sheet Turners, of which -the following is a specification,.reference being hadlt o the accompanying drawings.
i This invention relates to an improved music sheet turner, and has for its primary object to provide'a simple, inexpensive, and reliable device of this character for turning the sheets of music.
:The nven ion ha f r a qthe ve y pontant vlobject to provide a device of the above character which is solconistructed that the same .niay be readily .rnounted or arranged upon a music stand, the music desk of a'pianohorin sheet musiclfolio.
It is a furtherobgect of our inventlon to provide ,adevice for the above purpose which maybe operated avith ease and facility and is of great convenience and serviceabi ity pra tica a e- M ith the above and other objects in view,
our invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of ,parts .to be hereinafter more fully d sc b claim and illu ra d in th accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan .iziew showing thesubject matter of our invention applied to a f lio v ch a s o n y us d (fo Ca ryi sheet music, and the music sheets properly attached to the turning arms; ,Fig'. 2 is an enlarged elevation showing the ounting of the supplementary sheet turning arms, and one of said arms thrown over into the p0 sition it occupies-after the sheet held thereby has been turned; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspectiaie view ofone of the sheet turning'arrns; ,and Fig. 1 4 is a plan view showing the device monntedupbll a Single rigid base an the addi onal ni g a m r mov d Figis a d t i ag nen ry re speetive view.
Referring in detail to thedrawing, 5 designates .the backing strip of the folio .which my b co struc d of hea y a boar ifi e o h r suitab materia in th ma ner of the ordinary book. T0 the opposite longitudinal edges of this backing strip, the foldable sides 6 of the folio are hingedly connected by means of the usual cloth binding sheet. To the strip 5 spaced bearing eyes or brackets indicated at 7 are secured,
and in these bearings the longitudinally extending rod 8 is rotatably mounted. The lower end of this rod is laterally extended as at 9 to provide a suitable handle while the other or upper end thereof is also horizon tally disposed to provide the sheet turn ing arm 10. The extremity of this arm is angularly bent and equipped with a suitable clamping device indicated at 11 for engage ment with the upper edge of the music sheet. Add tional or supplementary sheet turn ng arms shown at 12 are preferably each formed from a single wire rod,"on'e of its ends being formed with an eye 13 loosely engaged upon a reduced portionof the rod 8 to turn with respect thereto. In this rod, adjacent to theeye 13, a smaller eye or loop 11 is formed which projects from the rod in a plane at right angles to the eyelil. The otherend of the wire rod is angularly bent as at 15 and then returned orcoiled to provide a (clamping loop 16 upon its extremity.
Upon the-inner face of the frontside wall 6 of the folio and adjacent to the longitu dinal edgethereof, a guideeye 1,7 is se'c' ured through which a link'chain 18,,exte1idsl One end of this chain is'provided with a ring 19 which is engaged in the eye 14' of oneof the sheet turning arms 12. The chain 18 is also provided with a second eye 20 loosely engaged upon the other of thewire arms 12 and outwardly of the loop 14 therein. It will benoted'that when both of the arms 12 are disposed on the right hand side of the which the lower edges of the ,music sheets are adapted to rest. It will be understood that these brackets are so located with respect toeach other that they will not contact or in any wayinterfere with the proper closing of the folio. After the'first sheet of musichas been opened upon the front wall 6 of the folio, the "next sheet isengaged at its upperedge in the clamp 11 provided on the arm 10 of the rod 8. The next music sheet isengaged by the clamping loop 16 on the end of the Wirearm 12 upon which the ring 20 of the chain 18 is engaged. It will be understood that the edge of the sheet is disposed upon the downwardly extended end portion 15 of the arm, the loop 16 formed thereon being sprung upwardly and engaged upon the upper face of the sheet. The other of the music sheets is then attached in a similar manner to the second arm 12 to which the end of the chain is permanently secured and which lies directly upon the back wall 6 of the folio. Having secured the sheets to the turning arms in this manner, when the musician desires to turn the second sheet of music, the lower end 9 of the rod 8 is swung over to the left upon the front wall 6 of the folio, thus also swinging the arm 10 upon the upper end of said rod and turning the sheet which is carried thereby. To turn the next sheet, the operator pulls upon the end of the chain 18. The ring 20 of said chain engages against the loop let of the rod 12 which acts as a stop, thus causing the chain to exert a pull upon the turning arm to swing the same on the rod 8 whereby the music sheet is turned over. In order to turn the next sheet, the chain is given a further pull so that the ring 20 will slide outwardly upon the arm 12 which has been turned while the other arm 12 to which the end of the chain is attached, is turned upon the rod 8, thus swinging the same thereon and turning the sheet. in this manner, the several sheets of music may be successively turned. To repeat the music, all of the sheets may be turned together to the right, by simply swinging the handle 9 on the lower end of the rod 8 over upon the back Wall 6 of the folio. The back wall of the folio is provided with a suitable handle 22 on its longitudinal edge and also fastening straps indicated at 23. In view of the very few parts employed in the construction of the device, it will be apparent that the same will not interfere with the folding of the folio walls to their closed positions.
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, we have illustrated the device as applied to a single rigid base 2% which may be suitably mounted upon a music stand or other structure. In this mounting of the device, only the rod 8 is shown arranged to turn upon the board 2st,
said rod being centrally disposed thereon. It will be understood that when the music .contains only a single loose sheet, it is not fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the additional rods or arms 12 may be utilized in accordance with the general character of the music usually provided for the performer, but in the interests of clear illustration, such additional arms are not shown. From the foregoing, the construction, manner of operation, and several advantages of our invention will be clearly and fu ly understood. The great convenience and serviceability thereof will be obvious. In view of the extreme simplicity of the invention, it will further be apparent that the same can be produced at very small manufacturing cost. It is also very durable in practical use.
While we have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it is to be understood that the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein, and we therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a sheet turning device, arod, turning arms loosely mounted at one of their ends M upon said rod and provided upon their other 15 ends with sheet clamping means, a flexible element connected at spaced points in its length to the respective turning arms and adjacent to said rod, whereby the arms may 7 be successively swung upon the rod to turn the respective sheets by a series of pulls upon the flexible element.
2. In a sheet turning device, a rotatably mounted rod having a turning arm on one end provided with means for attaching a sheet thereto, additional turning arms loosely mounted at one of their ends upon said rod and also each provided with sheet clamping means, and manually operable M flexible means permanently connected di- 11o rectly to each of said additional arms to independently operate the same and successively turn the sheets held thereby.
3. In a sheet turning device, a rotatably, mounted rod having a turning arm on one 1115 end provided with means for attaching a sheet thereto, additional turning arms loosely mounted at one of their ends upon a said rod and also each provided with sheet clamping means, a flexible element attached at one of its ends to one of said additional arms and slidably connected to the other of said arms, said latter arm being provided with a stop to limit the movement of said element with respect thereto in one direc- 1 tion, whereby said arm is first actuated when the flexible element is pulled to turn the sheet held thereby, the sheet held by the other arm being turned by a further pull of said element. 1 l
4. In a sheet turning device, a rotatable mounted rod having a turning arm on one end provided with means for attaching a sheet thereto, additional turning arms loosely mounted at one of their ends upon said rod and also each provided withsheet clamping means, each of said arms being provided with an eye intermediate of its ends, a chain connected to one of said eyes, and a ring carried by said chain and slidably engaged upon the other of the additional arms, the eye in said arm limiting the sliding movement of the ring thereon in one our signatures in the presence of two wit- 2C nesses.
