Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1916.
Application filed October 20, 1913. Serial No. 796,207.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN P. KNowLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Page and Stub Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is the production of a device Which is adapted to be connected with the free edge of a book cover, and to hold any number of leaves or stubs of a book in open position when the book is open, and also to mark any leaf or page when the book is closed and hold the same so that the book can be easily opened at the desired place.
This invention is particularly although not exclusively adapted for use upon account books, journals and check books.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device which shall be easily attachable and detachable, and which can be easily and readily adjusted to hold any number of leaves or stubs.
More particularly this invention is an improvement upon the construction disclosed in Patent Number 1,067,927, granted to me on the 22nd day of July, 1913, for page or stub clamps.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a perspective of an account book showing my invention applied thereto.
A indicates the body of the device, which is formed with a lower side 2, and with a pair of upper lips 3 or side lying parallel with said lower side and connected thereto by a vertical web 4:, thus producing a channel 5, which is adapted to receive an edge such as 6 of a back cover 7 of a book such as B (see Fig. 3). The lips are provided with thumb set screws 8 threaded downwardly therethrough and terminating in points 9 which are adapted to impinge the channel member or body upon the back cover of the book, and hold the device firmly in place. Extending upwardly above the web 4 and between said lips is a lug or car 10, which forms a support for a clamp bolt 11, the shank of which is threaded thereinto, and adapted to be turned by the thumb piece 12. Against the side of the lug 10 and hinged upon the shank of the bolt 11, which acts as a pintle is a flat supporting arm 13 which is adapted to swing when the bolt 11 1s loosened in substantially the same plane or in a plane parallel to the plane in which the web at of the body lies. A washer 14 on the outside 01": the arm 13 and over the shank of the bolt 11 assists in permitting the bolt 11 to be turned down tight against the side of the arm 13 without changing the radial position of the arm 13. The upper free end of the arm 13 is provided with a laterally extending page holding rod 17, made out of aflat strip of metal or other suitable material bent at one end to form a support 15, which is pivotally secured to the arm 13 by means of the rivet 16. This rivet permits the rod 17 to turn longitudinally while it is supported rigidly in lateral position but preferably, although not necessarily, binds the rod on its support so that it cannot turn too freely for convenience in manipulating. By pivoting the rod 17 upon the free end of the arm 13, the lower flat side of the rod will automatically adjust itself flat side down upon the pages of the book, no matter what longitudinal angular position the arm 13 assumes.
In use the body is slipped over the back cover 7 of the book with the outer edge 6 of the cover resting against the web 4 between the side 2 and lips 3. The set screws 8 are then set firmly into the cover. The leaves 15 which it is desired to hold in place are then turned back against the cover member 7, and the rod 17 is turned down flat when the clamp is in use, and that the device is not bulky, but flat and thin, and 00- cupies very little space, not bulging the book when the latter is closed. It will also be noted that the placing of the arm 13 with its fiat sides disposed longitudinally pro- =1? duces great strength of construction which is required in a device for holding down a large number of leaves in books of both large and small dimensions.
In accordance with the patent statutes I iii? have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which new donsider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the inventionoanr be carried out'by other means and applied tof uses other than those above ,set, forth Copies of this patent may be obtained for r r 1,183,082 H means, an arm projecting from and adjustably mounted upon said ear, and a finger pivotally carried by said arm and adapted to overlie the leaves of the bookin a plane substantially parallel to that of said securing means.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tW0 subscribing Witnesses.
