MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 5, 1918.
Application filed March 20, 1917. Serial No. 156,007.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTiN JELLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music- Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in music leaf turners and the objects are to construct a device which may be readily attached to any of the standard makes of pianos and easily operated by the pianist, also to provide a turner which, when detached,- may be folded into a form convenient for carrying from place to place.
I attain these objects by means of the mechanism hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which,--
Figure 1 is a front view of my invention in perspective;
Fig. 2, an end view of same attached to the music rest of a piano.
Fig. 3, a view of the underside of the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, a sectional view of the ratchets and push keys operated. thereby;
Fig. 5, a detail view of one of the arms which support; the book or sheet;
Fig. 6, a detail view of one of the leaf turning arms, and
Fig. 7, a detail view of one of the clips by means of which the upper edge of the leaf is attached to the turning arm.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
At intervals within the honor shell-casing A are placed one or more sprocket wheels 1 pivoted to said casing by means of crank extensions 3 of the leaf turner arms 9, each of which is rigidly secured to its respective sprocket wheel. Leaf turner arms 2 are provided with coils 3, for holding the lower edges of the leaves; adjustable elbowjoints 4, whereby the outer portion of the arms are raised in line with the vertical edges of the leaves; cranks 5; spring clips 6 attached to the crank-pins, for engaging the vertical edges of the leaves. Perforated slides 8 engage sprocket wheels 1 and project through the front edge of the casing A a sufficient distance to afford the necessary play for operating the mechanism. The outer ends of said slides are provided with buttons or knobs 9. Arms 14:, pivoted at one end to casing A, extend on either side of said casing and are provided at their outer ends with sockets 15 for holding the outer leaves or covers of the sheet or book.
The device is secured to the music rest of a piano by means of clamp 10 provided with adjustable angle slide 11 and set screw 12. A modified form of clamp (13) is provided for pianos whereon the music rest is of a different construction.
To operate my device it is secured to the piano by means of the clamp, the outer leaves or covers of the music sheet or book placed in sockets 15 with the bottom of the book resting on the casing; the perforatedits respective key is pressed inward, thus turning its respective sprocket wheel and swinging the turner arm and leaf around toward the front and across to the opposite end of the rest.
To fold the turner the arms are all swung to one side of the casing and the forearms folded at the elbows over onto the main arms, thus making it compact and convenientfor carrying or packing.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A leaf turning device comprising a casing having front and rear walls, said walls having pairs of opposed guide openings, slotted sprocket bars slidably mounted in and extending through said pairs of openlILQ'S, said bars being smooth on both sides, whereby they may slide freely through said guide openings. sprocket wheels in said casing having teeth meshing with said bars, and a leaf-engaging crank arm rigidly connected to each of said wheels.
2. In a leaf-turning device. a support, and a plurality of crank arms pivotally mountstanding portion to form a coil or loop adapted to grlp the lower edge of a leaf.
MARTIN J ELLUM.
ed on said support, each of said crank arms comprising a substantially horizontal portion and an upstanding portion the upstanding portions or" the arms having leafholding clips, and the horizontal portion of each arm being made of resilient Wire and bent at a point between the pivot and uplVitnesses BEULAH A.
