To all whom it may concern:

1 ,Be it known that I, JOHN APPLE'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Amador, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum Attachments for Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enab e others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadI to the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in books, and particularly to the covers thereof, my object being to produce a device as will be a convenient memorandum-holder for use on books. This object I accomplish by attaching to the covers of books elastic holders, arranged as described in the following specifition and claim.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book having one form of my device installed thereon. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a book provided with another form of my improved memorandum attachment. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing a modification of Fig. 2.

1 designates the book, to either cover of which are attached elastic bands 2, under which may be inserted memorandum-sheets 3. Fig. 1 shows the bands 2 as worked into binding of the book, while Figs. 2 and 3 show the covers provided with slots 4, into which the bands are inserted, said bands encircling the covers.

5 is a movable spring clip adapted to grip the cover of the book, as shown, which clip is provided with two hooks 6, disposed in opposite directions and adapted to receive the bands 2, so that the distance between said bands may be reduced in order that they may hold cards 6 or other small memorandumslips. In practice, instead of the clips 5, there may be provided notches 8 in the edge of the covers, which Would serve the same purpose as the clips 5.

My device I have found to be very useful to students, ministers, and others who are making notes while studying. It is also very advantageous for ministers in delivering their texts. On the memorandum-slip 3 may be noted the texts, and thus when the minister arises to announce the same he has them right at hand. Students in studying when they desire to make a note of a subject need only to turn to the cover and the memorandum-slip is at hand.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a book one cover of which is provided with two slots near the back 'thereof one at each end, elastic bands one in each of said slots said bands encircling said cover, and a spring-clip gripping said cover and provided with a sma l hook at each end thereof, said hooks adapted to receive said bands, as set forth.
