ly invention relates to tiling or index cards adapted tor use in index tiling cases equipped with a rod tor locking the cards in place.

The purpose ot mv invention is the provision of index cards having locking means carried thereby 'for positively securing the card 'to the rod in a manner to eliminate the necessity of completely or even partly removing the rod 'from the tiling case in elicoting the insertion or removal of a card.

l will describe one forni of card and two forms of locking devi( es embodying my invention and will then point ont the novel ea tures thereof in claims.

Referring specifically to the drawings, C designates an index card of the usual construction to the lower edge of which is applied one form ot' locking device embodying my invention which is generally designated at L. 'l he locking device L comprises a yoke 'formed from a single sheet of metal or the like, which is bent upon itself intermediate its edges and along its longitudinal axis to provide body portions 15 and a pair of U-shaped extensions 16. ln the applied position of the yoke, the lower edge of the card C is inserted between the body portions 15, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 3, and is secured therein by means of pins or rivets 17. ln this position of the body portions 15, the extensions 16 are disposed in depending relation to the lower edge of Specification of Letters Patent.

the card C, and. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the extensions are spaced apart to form a recess or pocket 18, in which the usual. locking rod R is adapted to be placed. Secured by means oi rivets 19 between the folds of the extensions 1G at the lower ends thereof are locking lingers 20. his shown in Fig. 2, the confronting ends ol the lingers 20 project into and part-ly span the mouth or open end of the pocket 18 in such manner as to partly constrict the same. This constriction is such as to prevent the lateral insertion ot' the rod l into the pocket without inn wardiy bending the lingers. The fingers 20 are li'ormed resilient material and are so arranged within the extensions as to permit flexing thereof .in plane at right angles to the plane ot the card Q. t will therefore be seen that when applying the card to the rod .l it is necessary to hold the card at an angle other than right angle with respect to the rod and with the card in this position, the rod may be laterally inserted into the pocket by forcing the card downwardly on to the rod, and then restoring it to its nor mal vertical position. As the lingers 2O are formed of a resilient metal, it is obvious that, after the card has been applied to the rod, the lingers will return to their normal positions, thereby locking the card to the rod and preventing accidental. disengagea ment of the two.

Referring now to Fig. L1, I have here shown another form ot locking device which is identical to the lrst form ot locking device, with the exception that the former is provided with dogs or pawls 21 which are pivoted as at 22 on the extensions 16. As shown in solid lines in Fig. 4, the dogs 21 normally assume a horizontal position and are supported in this position by means ot lugs 23 formed on the extensions 16 adjacent to the mouth ot the pocket 18. The con fronting ends of the dogs 21 are normally spaced apart a distance sufficient to cause the same to be lifted to the position shown in dash lines when the card is applied to the rod R to eli'ect the insertion of the rod into the pocket. After this operation has been effected, it is obvious that, because of the mounting of the dogs 21, they will gravi tate to horizontal position upon the lugs 23. Because of the disposition of the lugs 23, it will be clear that a card cannot be removed from the rod without lirst lifting the dogs to the position shown in dash lines.

Although l have herein shown and described only tivo forms of locking devices embodying my invention, it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what claim is:

1. n combination, a card for use in card index filing cases, and a locking device carried by the card i'or locking the same to the locking rod of the oase comprising, a yoke having a pocket formed therein and a pair oi' movable lingers biased to a spanning position .with relation to the mouth of said pocket in a manner to cause movement of the same against their bias when the rod is inserted into the pocket, and to allow of their return to their biased position after the rod is inserted into the pocket.

2. 1n combination, a card for use in card indexing tiling cases, and a device carried by said card for locking the same to the lool;- ing rod of the case comprising, a yoke having a pocket formed therein7 and a pair of fingers resilient in one direction partly span` ning the mouth of said pocket and supported for flexing at right angles to the plane of the card.

3. In combination, a card for use in card indexing filing cases, and a device carried by said card for locking the same to the lock ing rod of the ease comprising, a yoke formed from a single sheet of metal bent to embrace the lower edge of said Card, depending extensions formed on said yoke, said extensions being spaced apart to provide a pocket7 and movable Fingers biased to a position wherein they partly span the mouth of said pocket.

In combination, a card for use in card indexing filing cases, and a device carried by said card for locking the same to the locking rod of the case comprising, a yoke having a pocket formed therein, dogs pivoted on said yoke and partly spanning the mouth of said pocket, and lugs associated with said dogs to lock the same against outward movement with respect to the month of said pocket.

5. ln combination, a card for use in card index filing cases, and a locking device carried by the card for iocking the same to the locking rod of a case comprising, a yoke having a pocket formed therein, and movable means for permitting the insertion of the rod into the pocket and for locking the rod therein alter insertion.
