Application filed October 20, 1926. Serial No. 142,824.
It is an object of this invention to provide a portfolio havingt-wo cover members'united at their inner ends by a connecting portion, and a binder support mounted on one of the cover members usually substantially at right angles to the said connecting portion so that a binder adapted to hold leavestherein may be readily engaged with or disengaged from the support. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a flexibleelement secured both' to the binder support and to one of the cover members of a portfolio so that the binder and its support may turn at varying angles tothe cover'member as the leaves inthe binder are turned. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a portfolio having means for preventing the binder slipping down below a predetermined position in its support when the latter is mounted on one cover member of a portfolio both cover members of which are adapted to form the'inclined sides of a stand having its apex at the connecting portion between the inner ends of said cover members. l j I Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following description in connec- 30 tion with which it will be noted'that whereas the invention is described and shown in conjunction with a portfolio having cover members adapted to open outwardly until their outer surfaces face one another, and the said members form two inclined sides of a stand, it may be applied to anytype of portfolio.
In the drawings:
Figure 1v illustrates a portfolio having a binder support mounted on one of its cover members. I
Figure 2 is another view of the portfolio showing the binder support, binder and leaves mounted in the latter.
Figure 3 shows the portfolio in use as a stand with the binder support, binder and leaves in the latter.
Figure 4 is a partial View showing one form of binder.
Figure 5 shows a binder support to receive the binder shown in Figure 4, and part of the cover member to which the binder support is flexibly attached.
Figure 6 is a section on the line VI-VI of Figure 5.
in Figure 7. In the drawings, 1 and 2 designate cover support, and t Figure 8 is a modified form of tended for insertion into binder inthe support shown members united at their inner ends as by a connecting portionB. To the cover member 2 and preferably substantially parallel with its margin 9 one end 10 of an element 11 is secured, on the oppositeend 14 of the element 11 a binder support 15 (or 15*) is attachedasby a rivet 16 (or 16"), and intermediately of its length the-element has a flexible portion12 of such length as to permit the end-'14 and the binder support 15 (or 15 thereon to turn about the cover member 2 as the leaves 5 in the binder 17 (or 17) are turned. L
In Figure 5 the element 11 is shown so secured to the cover member 2 that its end 14, when substantially in line with its cover member, projects beyond the margin 9 of the latter, but when turned substantially at right angles toits' cover member the said end '14; and the binder support 15 extend substantially in linewith the margins 9 and 9 of the cover members 2 and 1 respectively.
a WInFigure 7 the element 11 is IIIOIlIltGCllIl such position on the cover member 2 that when the end 14 lies substantially fiat against the said cover member its outer margin substantially coincides with the mar gin 9. Obviously wider leaves may be utilized if the binder support is mounted as in Figure 5 than if as shown in Figure 7, but the construction shown in Figure 7 affords greater protection to the end 14 and its binder support 15 particularly when no binder is mounted therein.
Referring again to Figures 4: and 5, the binder supportlohas inturned margins 18 which form guides for the lateral projections 19 on the binder 17, and the lower end 20 of the binder, when in posit-ion, rests against a projection 21' located towards the lower end of the support 15. When several binders are provided, any one of which may be inserted into the portfolio for display purposes, it is sometimes advisable to do away withthe projections 19. In that event the construction shown in Figures 7 and 8 may be utilized. The margins 18 of the binder support are upturned to act as guides for the sides of the binder 17 and the latter Figure 7 shows a modified form of binder I has pins 22 with enlarged heads 22 projecting outwardly therefrom. These pins (:0- operate withcatches 23 on the support 15 which have enlarged openings 23 at their 7 one edge of the leaves ,5 is attached. At tllfi other end of the flexible portion 4 is a flap 6 which'is'in turn secured to an extension piece 7 by a joint 8. The cover member 1, the flap 6 and the extension piece? are provided with fasteners 24 sothatthe portfolio maybe secured either in closed position or in, such position as to form a triangular stand as indicated in Figure 3.
It willbe noted that both methods herein showvnylor holding binders; in position in their supports are designed to-,eret-ain them primarily in a Vertically inclined position since the binder holding means is usually employedinportfolios of this nature It is, however,- apparent from the foregoing that portfolios the c'oyermembersI1 and 2 of whichlie outstretchedmay also be provided with such binder holding means While in thejforegoing the preferred emr bodiments of the invention have been described and shown, itzis'understood that the construction is susceptible-to such modificav tions as fall within the scopeofthe appended claims. a
