Description

Aug. 21, 1928. 1,681,552
F. R. MOUNT El AL HATRACK Filed May 7, 1927 Patented Aug. 21, 1928.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK R. MOUNT AND CHARLES P. YOUNG, "OF WARREN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed Kay 7, 1927. Serial No. 189,581.
The present invention relates to a simple and eflicient hat rack particularly adapted for use in automobiles although capable of application in other places. The device is composed of two elements, one of which is a sinle piece of wire and the other of which can he readily stamped out of sheet metal into the desired form. This rack may be fastened in various locations as found necessary or desirable by means of screws or similar fastenings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof with parts in elevation.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the base member of the hat rack.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of amodified form of base. v
This hat rackis composed of two elements, one of which may be referred to as a base member and comprises a flange'l which is bent at an angle to the body portion 2 and is provided with holes 3 through which may pass screws or similar fastenings. At the side opposite to the flange 1 the body member has outwardly extending curved arms 5, each of which is provided with a lug 6 as shown in Figure 4. Intermediate the arms 5 the body portion may be provided with a lug 7 struck out of the sheet metal as indicated in Figure 4. :As shown in Figure 5 this lug maybe omitted if desired.
The other member of the hat rack comprises a single piece of wire 8, the body portion of which is somewhat oval in form and the free ends of which are turned slightly upures 1 to 4 this bend hooks under the lug 7 which may, if desired, be pressed downward- 1y somewhat and the lugs 6 are then bent upward and over from the Figure 4 position into that shown in Figures 1 and 2 wherein they clamp the wire and hold it firmly in position. In the form shown in Figure 5 the lug 7 is omitted but the bend 10 affords a broad engagement between the wire and the body member 2. This engagement together with the holding lug 6 prevents any accidental displacement in the hat engaging wire member 8.
As illustrated the flange 1 is bent at substantially right anglesto the body portion2 for the purpose of attaching a holder to asubstantially vertical wall. It is obvious that this flange may be bent ata different angle if it is found desirable to attach the holder to a surface which is not vertical. Other minor changes in the precise form and construction may be made and the material of which the two parts is constructed may be selected as desired. In general it may be noted that the invention is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. A hat rackconsisting of a sheet metal body member having an attaching flange and a plurality of lugs and a discontinuous wire member bent into appropriate shape and engaged and held to the body member by said lugs, said wire member also having intermediate its ends a short bend which lies against the face of the sheet metal body member.
2. A hat rack consisting of a sheet metal body member having an attaching flange and a plurality of lugs, and a discontinuous wire member bent into appropriate shape and enaged and held to the body member by said ugs, said wire member also having intermediate its ends a short bend which lies against the face of the sheet metal body member, and said body member having a 'lu struck out of the material thereof under w ich the short bend of the wire may pass.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
FRANK R. MOUNT. CHARLES R YOUNG.
