Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Y Application led February 24, 1920. Serial No. 361,042.
i To allie/1,0m 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD SHOGRAN, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display-Fixtures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in display fixtures, and it consists in the combination, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed:
An object of my invention is to provide a display xture adapted to support for display purposes articles of varying sizes and different classes.
A further object of my invention is to provide a display fixture having a novel form of supporting member for supporting the articles to be displayed, which supporting member can be instantly adjusted vertically with respect to the fixture and is adapted to firmly hold ordinary supporting plates of varying sizes without altering the said plates in any way, as by boring holes therethrough.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is ornamental in appearance, strong and durable in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will appear in thefollowing specication, and the novel features of the invention Will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device, showing a shoe displayed thereon,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the device along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a pair of the devices arranged to support a plate. Y
In carrying out my invention, I provide a base 1 upon which is mounted a tubular stanchion 2 having a collar or head 3 at its lower end. The vstanchion 2 may be secured to the base 1 in any improved man-V ner, as by means of a screw 4. A plate supporting member, having a tubular body portion 5 and a central bore 6, is slidably disposed upon the stanchion 2 and may be secured thereto by means of a set screw 9, which is screwed into a threaded opening l0 provided in the body portion 5. The body portion 5 has laterally extending integral flanges 7 and 8 at each end thereof. A plurality of threaded openings 11 are provided through the flange 8 along the outer edge thereof and are adapted to receive set screws 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
The space provided between the flanges 7 and 8 forms a socket 13 adapted to receive plates 14. The plates 14 may be of any thickness less than the distance between the flanges 7 and 8 and are secured in the socket 13 by the set screws 12, which are screwed through the threaded openings 11. The plates 14 may also be of any desired shape and material. In the embodiment of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, the plates 14 are made of glass and are held in the socket 13 without the plates being altered in any way, as by boring holes therethrough to receive screw members.
Each plate may be of sufiicient size to permit the article to be displayed being placed directly upon the plate or an article may be placed upon a support, such as is commonly used, and the support then placed upon the plate. In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, I have shown a shoe 15 carried by a support 16 which is of ordinary construction, the latter being supported by a plate 14.
The upper end of the stanchion 2 carries an ornamental glass cap 17 which is secured thereto by means of a spring 18. By referring to Fig. 4 of the device, it will be noted that these devices may be used as one of a plurality of supports for a large plate 25 and a display stand provided in this manner which is adapted to support a number of articles which may be of diferent sizes and classes.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The device permits the use of glass plates or metal plates, as desired. If glass plates are used, they may be inserted within the socket 13 and secured thereto without boring holes through the glass. Consequently, should the glass plate be broken, a plate of different thickness may be substituted therefor.
The device may be used as a support to form display stands, shelves, and like articles of various sizes and types.
It is obvious that many modifications and uses of the device may be made in addition to those set forth and I therefore considerv supporting member vertically sl'dable and rotatably movable on said stanchion7 said .plate supporting member comprising a body portion7 an integralV laterally extending liangeateach end thereof, a set screw screwingthrongh the body portion toV secure the said plate supporting member to said stanchion and set screws screwing through One of .the extending fanges, and a plate held between'the flanges of said plate supporting member and secnredthereto by the set screw-sin one. olthe flanges of said plate support-ing member.
Y i f LEONARD SHOGRAN.
