Description

JAMES F. SWIFT, or MusKoGEn, oiiLAHoivrA.

TABLE-LEVELER.

To all whom mt may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES F. Swlr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table- IJSVQIQI'S, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in table levelers.

The object of my invention is to provide a support for the leg of a table, such as a billiard table, by which the table may be readily adjusted to a level position. My invention is applicable also to other articles of furniture such as pianos, organs, desks, etc.

My invention provides a construction which permits of the ready and secure attachment of the table leveler to the article to which it may be aflixed. It provides also a construction which permits ready adjustment without danger of marring or otherwise damaging the floor.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention Figure 1 is an elevation of a billiard table provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional View of my improved table leveler shown mounted on a table leg, ,a portion of which is shown. Fig. 3 is a plan View enlarged of the table leveler. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device detached from the table.

Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.

The table leveler in its preferred form is provided with a leg member 1 having preferably a cylindrical form and having preferably extending vertically therethrough a central screw threaded hole. The leg member denoted by 1 has fitted therein a vertical screw threaded shank 2 of a rotary floor member 3 having at its lower end an enlarged head 1 the lower side of which is convex, and the periphery of which is pro vided with one or more recesses 5 adapted to receive therein a wrench or other instrument by which the floor member may be rotated for the purpose of vertically adjusting the table leg to which the leg member 1 is secured.

The leg member 1 is adapted to fit within a recess provided vertically in the lower end of the leg (3 of the table 7 To securely retain the leg member 1 in the table leg the leg member has extending horizontally through it a securing device comprising preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 22, 1909.

Patented Oct. 11, 1910.

Serial No. 485,029.

a rod 9 which has projecting ends adapted when the leg member 1 is inserted in the table leg to be driven into the leg and there by securely engage with the leg to prevent the accidental removal of the leg member. In its preferable form the securing rod 9 is provided with downwardly turned ends 10 which preferably extend laterally in opposite directions. \Vith the securing rod so formed when the leg member is forced into the recess of the table leg, the pressure exerted upon the ends 10 of the rod 9 will tend to force said ends toward a position in vertical alinement with each other. This tendency however will be resisted owing to the rigidity of the material of which the rod '9 is preferably formed. The result will be that the ends 10 of the rod will tend to diverge from the positions in which they are held, which tendency will be lncreased by any strain that is applied to the leg member tending to force it downwardly out of the recess.

It will be understood that each leg of the table will be provided with one of the table levelers. After each leveler has been at tached to the table the table is adjusted to a level position by turning the floor members to the proper positions. This may be done by inserting any suitable instrument 111 one or more of the recesses 5, and by such means imparting rotation to the floor member 3 1n the proper direction.

The leg member 1, floor member 3, and securing rod 9 may be composed of metal or any other suitable material. By reason of the convexity of the lower end of the floor member 3, it will be supported at its center upon the floor and may be freely rotated without injury to a carpet or the floor which supports it.

I do not confine my invention to the precise structure illustrated and described as it is obvious, that various modifications of my invention, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made Without departing from its spirit.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is r 1. A table leveler comprising a leg member, a securing rod which extends transversely through the leg member and having projecting downwardly turned ends which extend laterally in opposite directions and are adapted to be driven into and engage a table leg, the leg having in its lower end a recess into which the leg member is fitted and a floor member which supports the leg member and upon which the leg member is Vertically adjustable.

2. A table leveler comprising a tubular internally screw threaded leg member, a securing rod which extends transversely through the leg member and having projecting downwardly turned ends which extend laterally in opposite directions and are adapted to be driven into and engage a table leg, the leg having in its lower end a recess into which the leg member is fitted and a rotary floor member which supports the leg member and upon which the leg member is vertically adjustable.

3. A table leveler comprising a leg member adapted to be fitted in a recess provided in a table leg, a securing rod which extends transversely through the leg member and having projecting downwardly turned ends which extend laterally in opposite directions, and a floor member supporting and having screw threaded engagement with the leg member.

4. A table leveler comprising a tubular internally screw threaded leg member, a securing rod which extends transversely through the leg member and having projecting downwardly turned ends which extend laterally in opposite directions and are adapted to engage a table leg, the leg having in its lower end a recess into which the leg member is fitted and a rotary fioor member supporting the leg member and having a lower end a recess into which the leg memher is fitted and a rotary floor member having a convex lower end and provided with a screw threaded shank fitted in the threaded portion of the leg member.

In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of subscribing witneses.

JAMES F. SWIFT.
