f LAMP-SHADE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,875, dated January 24;, 1905.

Application filed May 17,1904. Serial No. 208,407.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known thatI, SYLENA A. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in lamp-shades.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of a shade which is formed from a blank sheet of material, said sheet being provided with means for retaining the meeting edges thereof in a locked condition when the same is folded.

- Another object of the invention is to provide a sheet of material with means whereby a shade can be easily formed when said sheet is folded and when it is desired the said shade can be readily unfolded.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a sheet of material with interlocking means which can be readily assembled when it is desired to form said sheet into a shade.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as, shall be herein after fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

A reinforcing-strip 6 is mounted upon the edge 8 of sheet 1. The strip 6 extends in approximately parallel position with said edge,

connecting the curved outer edge 7 and recessed portion 2 of sheet 1. While any fastening means may be employed for the purpose of retaining strip 6 in a proper assembled position, I preferably employ a plurality of eyelets 8. One eyelet is fastened to sheet land strip 6 near the outer curved edge 7 and near the opposite end of said strip 6 an additional eyelet is secured. Intermediate of the end eyelets or rivets I preferably secure one or more eyelets for the purpose as hereinafter specified. Owing to the construction of means 8, sheet 1 when formed into a shade or hood may be positioned upon a suitable support which is provided with means adapted to engage and extend through the eyelet secured upon sheet 1 and strip 6 near the curved edge 7.

When it is desired to form a lamp-shade from a sheet of material constructed in accordance with the present invention and having fastening means which comprises the re inforcing-strip' 6, provided with eyelets which form a plurality of binding-slits which are adapted to be engaged by means of the tongues 5 being passed therebetween, the slitted portion 4-. engaging and partially encircling eyelets 8, as shown in Fig. 3 at 9, it will be necessary to fold sheet 1 into the shape of a cone, as depicted in Fig. 2, and subsequently pass tongues 5 between sheet 1 and strips 6 (clearly depicted in Fig. 3) for the purpose of securing the meeting edges of the shade or hood in a fixed position.

l/Vhen the tongues are poeasily disassembled, owing to the fact that it is only necessary to withdraw the tongued portion of the straight edge from engagement with the slitted clamping portion thereof.

In constructing a shade in accordance with the present invention there is formed upon a sheet of material an extension which is adapted to be positioned within binding or clamping means for retaining the meeting edges of said sheet in an assembled position. The triangular slots are necessarily formed upon the straight edge in such position as will lie parallel with the position of the eyelets 8, secured upon member 6 and strip 1, when the meeting edges are folded, for it will be obvious that this is required for the purpose of permitting the tongues to pass into and through the clamping means which is formed as heretofore specified.

While I have described the preferred construction of my invention and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious that certain alterations, modifications, and changes may be resorted to in the construction of the blank forming the body portion of the shade, in combination with fastening means for retaining the blank in its folded position, without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications, and changes.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character described comprising a sheet adapted to be folded, tongues upon the sheet, a reinforcing-strip upon the sheet adapted to receive the tongues between it and the sheet to hold said sheet in folded position, and fastening devices connectil'ig the strip to the sheet, said tongues being adapted. to rest between but out of engagement with the fastening devices.

2. A shade comprising a semicircular sheet having engaging edges, a reinforcing-strip upon one of said edges, a plurality of eyelets passing through said strip and the sheet, and a plurality of tongues formed upon the opposite engaging edge and adapted to be positioned between the eyelets and underneath the reinforcing-strip.

3. A lamp-shade comprising a sheet having a reinforcing-strip adjacent one edge, a plurality of fastening devices connecting said strip and sheet and a plurality of integral extensions upon another edge of the sheet and projecting between but out of engagement with the fastening devices.
