TEMPORARY BINDER FOR PERIODICALS Filed Feb. 1. 1924 til Patented duly fill,

CHARLES FRANZ Jlia, F MIL'W'AUKEE, VTTSGONSIN.
TFJTl JIFUlEtJ AEEZ FENDER FDR IPEEIUDIGJ-LLS.
Application filed February 1, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GIEELES FRANZ, Jr, a citizen of the United States, an d resident of" MilWaul-ree, in the county oi: Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented oer tain new and useful improvements in Tomporary Binders tor Periodicals; and do hereby declare that tle following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to temporary binders, and is particularly directed to tern porary binders for periodicals, books, or other similar articles, and in the Following; dewription and claims it is to be clearly 'stood that the term hook is to include quine, periodical, paper, pamphlet, What is commonly known as a book, or any of the usual articles oi? this general nature and, therefore, the term book will be used with this significance to avoid needless repetiti on.
Objects of this invention are to provide a temporary binder for a book which has no projecting or exposedmetal or other por tions, Wllltll will not scratch a desk, ul ich can not be unlocked Without an appropriate instrument such, for instance, as a socket wrench, and which may he rpl'clrly manipulated tor the insertion or removal of a bool: by an operator suitably equipped with the appropriate instrument.
Fru'ther objects are to provide having covers joined in a secure manner to a body structure oi? material strength and rigidity, to provide a binder which, has an attractive, neat, and finished appearance, in Which all oi? the metal or other portions which Would ordinarily come into View are completely covered by a iinishing strip, and to provide a binder oi? this general type which, although possess 1g these desirable characteristics may, nevertheless, be cheaply and rapidly manutactured.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary transverse sec tion through the binder showing a book in position, such view corresponding to a section on the line 1--1 oi Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a top View of the binder with portions broken away.
Figure 3 is a sectional. View on the line 33 of Figure 2.
The binder comprises a channel metal body Which includes a back 1, and upper and lower flanges 2 and 3, respectively.
a b inde r and [iron Serial No. 689,921.
This member is preferably of integral construction and provides the necessarystrength and rigidity for the structure. A pair of filler strips l and 5 are secured to the outer sides of the flanges 2 and 3.
The covers 6 and 7 may be of leather, composition, treated fabric or other similar material and are preferably flexible. They are integrally joined by a back portion 8, as illustrated in Figure 1. To this back portion, a strip 9 of strong material is secured by means of parallel. spaced lines of stitching 10. .i -ilso it may be found expedient and preferable to glue the back 3 to the strip 9 and to glue the strip 9 to the back portion or vertical portion 1 or the channel member or body member. Thereafter, the outer portious 11 of the. strip 9 are glued to the outer sides or the strips l and 5 and their extreme. ends 12 are inturned over the ends of the strips and the flanges 2 and 3 of the body portion.
From the construction thusfar outlined, it is apparent that the covers 6 and 7 may he opened tree of the portions 11 of the finishing strip or attaching strip, and that, there fore, no needless bunching or folding occurs during the use 0t this binder.
At one end of the apparatus a rivet or bolt 13 is provided and extends through the upper and lower flanges 2 and 3 0t thebody portion,-the filler strips 4t and 5 being suitably recessed to receive the riveted or en larged head off the pin 13.
The filler strips, as Well as the portions 11 of the attaching or securing strips, are apertured, as. indicated at l l and l t, at the other end oi? the apparatus. A nut 15 is rigidly secured Within an appropriate aperture formed in one of the flanges of the body portion, for instance, the flange 3, see Fig. 3. The nut is adapted to receive the threaded end of a removable pin 16 which is freely passed through an appropriate aperture in the upper flange 2 of the body portion. This pin, it Will be noted, is provided with a square or properly faced head 17 which is received Within, and completely housed by the aperture 14:.
It is to be noted that no apertures are formed through either the upper or lower cover 6 or 7, respectively, but that such covers are imperforate throughout their extent.
The means ior directly engaging the book may comprise a pair of flat bars 18 termiiii nating in eyeleted ends. Any number of bars may be provided and may be positioned between certain of the leaves of the books, as illustrated in the drawings. One of the eyeleted ends of each of the bars permanently receives the fixed pin 13 and is adapted to freely rock about such pin when removing or replacing a book. The other of the eyeleted ends of the bars removably receive the threaded pin 16,being thus locked when such pin is positioned.
In using the binder, it is merely necessary to position the bars 18 between leaves of the book 19 when such bars are rocked outwardly about the pin 13. Thereafter, the book and bars are rocked into position pivoting upon the pin 13 as a center, and the rcmovable pin 16 is slipped into position and screwed fast in the nut 15 thus locking the bars 18 and consequently the book in their correct positions.
It is to be noted that there are no project ing portions liable to scratch or mar polished surfaces, and that the complete article is adequately finished so that an attractive and neat appearance is secured.
it is further to be noted that it is impos sible to remove the book without the aid of a socket wrench or a similar instrun'ient adapted to fit within the hole i i and engage the head 17 of the removable pin; thus the theft of books from these temporary covers or binders is prevented.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
1. A ten'iporary binder for books comprising a rigid, permanently shaped channel body portion having upper and lower flanges adapted to receive a book betwe n them, a pin joining said flanges adjacent one end, a ren'iovable pin extending said flanges adjacent the other end thereof, one end oi said pin and the corresponding flange being arranged for interlocking en gagement, the other end oi. said pin being suitably contoured to receive a driving instrument, a locking bar pivotally carried by said first me ion-ed pin and adapted to be received between the leaves oi? aid books, said locking bar having an aperturcd free end adapted to receive said removable pin, said body portion having a strip secured to the outer side oil one of said flanges and aperturcd to receive and house the head of said removable pin, and covers secured to said body portion, one of said covers normally and removabiy closing said aperture in said strip. 2. A ten'iporary binder for books comprising a body portion formed as a rigid channel saving upper and lower lianges, pins extending through said flanges adjacent the ends thereof, one of said pins being removable, locking bars adapted to be positioned betv-v'een the leaves or abook and held by said pins, a securing strip fastened to the back oi said body portion and e tending inwardly around the inner ends oi said ilanges and rearwardly towards the back of said body portion, and a cover having upper and lower portions and a back, said back being joine'c to said securing strip by upper and lower spaced, parallel iines of stitching. in testimony that I claim the foregoing have hereunto set my hand at ilw ukee, in the county of lniilwaukee and State of \Visconsin..
