Description

Oct. '4, 1938. D. H. sHAPlRo HANDLE ATTACI'IMENT FOR PAPER BOXES 2 sheets-Sheet 2 5 Filed April 17, 1937 v BY /.@TTORNEY.
v Patented Oct. 4, 1938 UNITED STATES PA TENT OFFICE Application April 17, 1937, Serial No. 137,458
In Canada January 12, 1937 16 Clalms. '(Cl. 229-52)` This invention relates to handle attachments for paper boxes and comprises a metal handle member designed for convenient application to paper boxes of the type. comprising half-sections 5- adaptedto fitA one within the other so that, in
the closed condition of the box, the top wall of the outer section is superposed on the top wall of the inner section, More particularly, the handle member provided in accordance with the present invention is designed so that it may be readily slipped onto the top 'wall of the, inner section of the box and then passed through a slot in the top wall of the outer section to thereby secure the two sections together lin addition to providing a carrying handle.
` In its preferred'embodiment the improved handle member comprises a wire ball having its side arms bent to form spring clips adapted to slide Y on and grip the top wall of the inner section of the box, the bail portion of the handle member being thus disposed so that it may be lconveniently passed through the slotted top wall of the outer section of the box as-the two sections are `closed togethen' According to another embodimenI of this invention a wooden handgrip is removably carried between two metal side arms formed as integral extensions of a wire clip porti'on which is slipped onto the top wall of the inner section of the box.
In this case the metal side arms of the ball portion are passed through the top wall of the outer section of the box prior to the application of the wooden handgrip.
According to a further embodiment of the invention the improved lhandle member is comblned with a hanger the whole Vpreferably forming a.
unitary, integral structure.
Other Objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds. i o
With the aforesaid objects in view. the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein like parts are designated by the same referencecharacters throughout the several views.
In the drawings:
.Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred' type of handle memberprovided ina'ccordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a well known typeof paper box (two-piece) showing the manner in which the handle member appearing in plied as shown Fig. 1 is applied to the'top wan'of the inner sec- -tion piece of the box. 4
Figure 3 is a' perspective view showing the paper box in closed condition with the bail portion of the handle member passingthrough the 4slot in the top wall of the outer section of the box.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse ectionai view taken along the line 1-4 of Fig. 3.
Figure 5 is a view of a slight modification with respect to the application of the handle member v shown in Fig. 1.
lhandle member appearing in Fig. 6 is engaged with the top wall of the inner section of the box.
Figure 8 is a perspective view showing the manner in which the two half-sections of the box are secured together by portions of the handle member appearing in Figs. 5 and 6.
Figure9 is a view similar to Fig. 8, but showing the handle member completed by the application of the wooden handgrip.
Figure 10 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view along the line ID-lil of Flg. 9.
Figure ll is a perspective view of one half :of a box showing the invention embodying a combined handle and hanger.
Figure 12 is a perspective detail ,of the combined handle and hanger shown in Fig. 11.
The advantages of the invention as here outo lined are best realized when all of its features and instrumentalities of each embodiment are com- ,structions The accompanying drawings, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exempliflcations of the invention.
The handle member shown in Figure 1 comprises a wire ball presenting a handle bar 5 and side arms 6, the latter being'reversely bent at their lower ends to provide U-shaped spring clips generally indicated at l. In applying this type of handle member vthe clips 'l are flrst slid onto the top wall -8 of the inner section 9 of the box shown in Fig. .2. The clips 'l are preferably designed so that, ywhen the handle member is apin Figure 2, the handle bar 5 and the arms 6 will be located approximately midway between the longitudinal sides of. the wall 8.
The two sections of the box are then closed together so that the inner section 9 is disposed within the outer section III as shown in Figure 3. During this operation the bail portion of the handle member is passed through a slot II formed in the top wall |2 of the outer section In. An adhesive strip S may be applied to prevent the sections 9, ID from separating at the bottom of the box when the latter is being carried by the handle.
In applying the handle member to larger sizes of boxes the top wall 8 of the inner section 9 may be provided with notches |3 (Fig. 5) in which the bight portion Ta-of the clips 'i are fitted, to center the bail portion of the handle between the longitudinal edges of the wall B so that it may be conveniently passed through the centrally located slot in the top wall of the outer section.
In the modification shown in Figure 6 the bail portion of the handle member comprises a wooden handgrip |5 removably carried between the upper ends of a pair of sidearms IB. In this case the arms IG are formed as integral vertical' extensions of the upper members Ila of a pair of spring clips generally indicated at IT. The lower members l'lb of the spring clips |1 are made longer than the top members I'la and are joined together by a cross-bar IB. y
Figure '7 shows by way of illustration, a onepi'ece box to which the modification shown in Figure 6 is applied.
In applying this type of handle member (Figure 6) the clips I'I are first engaged with the top Wall of the inner section 9' of the box as shown in Figure 7. The two sections 9', IO' of the box are then closed together as shown in Figure 8 and, in the course of this operation, the arms IS are passed upwardly through openings |9 provided in the top wall 12 of the outer section of the box. The wooden handgrip E3 is then fitted in place between the upper ends of the arms las shown in Figure 9. In this connection it will be n'oted that the upper ends of the arms IB terminate in inwardly directed pintles lGa.` which are fitted in sockets I'Sa provided in the ends of the handgrip I5.
In the modification shown in Figure 12, the handle member comprises a wire bail presenting a handle bar 20 and ,side arms 2i, the latter being reversely bent at their lower ends to provide U-shaped spring clips indicated at 22. At the lower end 23 of these U-shaped clips the wire bail is bent to form extensions 24 and outwardly extending arms 25 from which is further extended the wire bail to form the bar 26 constituting the development ofthe hanger A. Figure 11 shows this type of combined handle and hanger applied to inner section 9 of the box depicted generally in Fig. 2.
