PORATION,
JOHN L. BENNETT, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO U, S. MANUFACTURING COR- OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS. V
EXTENSION TOASTER OR BROILER.
Application filed February I This invention relates to improvements in combined toaster and broiler and the prin cipal object is the provision of such a device which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to manipulate and simple and effective in use. It may be used for various culinary purposes such as toasting,v
broiling and the like.
i To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear,
struction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and which show, merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it beingexpressly understood, how ever, that various changes may be made in practice within the scopeof the claims with-- out digressing from my inventive idea.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed according to my invention, the parts being shown in closed position.
v Figure 2 is a similar view, theparts shown in open position. 7
Figure 3 is aside elevation of the device shown in Figure 1. v
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body of the device which is provided by a frame member 2 in the form of a rectangularly shaped wire or rod 3 to which is secured a woven netting lby welding or. other suitable means. Of course, it is understood that any form of reticulated material may be used to form this body. The frame member 2 has its free end portions extended these parts extending parallel in close proximity to each other to brace each other and being form a construction of sufficient strength. These parts may themselves be directly se illuscured into a gripping handle such as trated in the drawings or as shown. in Figure 1. These parts may form the extending port-ion of the handle construction as a whole. When the device is closed they are positioned on top of the parallel parts 6 of the main handle 7 which is formed of suitable wire having an open loop 8 to receive the grip member 9. The main handle and the extensible handle are slidably and frictionally held together by means of a plural this lnvention consists in the con-- shown being one form of may be as at 5 to form a handle, 1
10, 1927, Serial No. 167,137. Renewed December 29, 1928.
of clip constructions 10 and the extensible handle portion is bent at its lower end as at 11 to form 'manipulating means. This handle construction in itself forms no part of this present invention as it forms the subject matter of my pending application Serial No. 158,582.
The top or cover member of this device, which is the holding member, includes a frame 12 formed of a suitable wire or rod 13 bent into a general rectangular shape and having a woven wirebody 14 suitably secured thereto. The frame memberlQ has its extremitalparts 15 extended in parallel relation to each other and clampedtogether by means of clips 16. The ends of these members are bent as at 17 for the purpose of manipulation'and also to receive a looking or holding clip 18 which is slidably mounted on the main handle construction. The top or cover member 12 is suitably pivoted or hinged to the body member, the rings 19 construction that used. This will permit a universal hinge so that the top or cover member may be swung on either side of the body member and the holding or locking member is like,- wise movable on either side of the'handle ity construction 50 as to clamp the cover member struction of the frame members and the handle'members is sufficiently resilient and flexible to permit the accomodation of arti- 'cles of various'sizes and dimensions within the device and also .to exert sutiicient pressure thereon to securely hold the samein position.
What I claim is' v 1. A device of the character described including, in combination, abody member including a frame formed into rectangular shape and having material secured thereto, the end portions of said frame being extended in parallel relation to each other to form a handle, a cover member pivotally connectedto said body member, said cover member including a frame formed of wire bent into a rectangular shapeand having material secured thereto, the free end portions of said frame being extended in close parallel relation to each other and provided With means for clamping them together and also formed With lateral extensions, and a holding member mounted on said first handle and adapted to engage said lateral extensions. V
2. A device of the character described including, in combination, a body member including a frame formed into rectangular shape and having material secured thereto, the end portions of said frame being extended in parallel relation to each. other to form a handle, a cover member pivot-ally connected to said body member, said cover member including a frame formed of Wire bent into a rectangular shape and having material secured thereto, the free end portions of said frame being extended in close parallel relation to each other and provided with means for clamping them together and also formed with lateral extensions, and a holding member mounted on said first handle and adapted to said lateral extensions, a main handl member on which said iirst-inentioned handle member is slidably mounted for extension purposes, said holding member being slidably mounted on said main handle member and said extensible handle member in either the extended or closed position.
3. A device of the character described including, in combination, a body member includinga frame formed into rectangular shape and having material secured thereto, the end portions of said frame being extended in parallel relation to each other to form a handle, a cover member pivotally connected to said body member, said cover member including a frame formed of Wire bent into a rectangular shape and having material secured thereto, the free end portions of said frame being extended in close parallel relation to each, other and provided. With means for clamping them together and also formed With lateral extensions, and a holding member mounted on said first handle and adapted to engage said lateralextensions, said holding member being adapted to engage the extensions of said frame or ,7 cover member When it is positionedon either side of said body member.
4. A device of the character described, including, in combination, a body member having an elongated extensible handle connected thereto, a cover member pivotally connected to one end of said body member and having dle being provided With engagement means,
an engaging member movably mounted upon said extensible handle member and adapted to engage and hold said engagement means,
' said engaging member being operable in all positions of said extended handle member. 5. A device of the character described, including, in combination, a body member having an elongated handle extending therefrom, a cover member having a loose pivotal connection with said body member so that it may be swun to both sides of said body member, said cover member alsohaving an elongatec handle adapted to lie close to said first-mentioned handle When in closed position and having engagement means thereon, an engaging member loosely mounted upon said first-mentioned handle and adapted, to engage said engagement means in either of the closed positions of said cover member.
6. ri device of the character described, including, in combination, a body member havi10 an elongated handle extending therefrom said elon ated handle includin 'a )air of parallel closely positioned Wire strands,
an extensible handle element upon Which said first-menti0nedhandle is mounted and a plurality of clips connectingsaid two handle elements at spaced intervals so that they are slidably and frictionally held relative to each other, a cover member pivotally connected to said body member and having a handle extending therefrom, and means upon said first-mentioned handle adapted to engage the handle of the cover When in'its closed position.
7. A device of the character described, in-
eluding, in combination, a body member having an elongated extensiblehandle construction connected thereto composed of tWo pairs of Wire strands, one pair resting upon the,
other With means for causing a slidable frictional engagement between said pairs of strands, a cover member having a handle extending therefrom, said handle being composed of a pair of Wire'strands and adapted to be positioned upon and lie close to said first-mentioned handle construction when in closed position, and means for locking said second-mentioned handle in its closed position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing,
of January, .1927.
JOHN L. BENNETT.
