This invention relates to. a handle at'taching device for use on suit cases, traveling bags, .or other receptacles i An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character-of extremely simple and inexpensive Construction although strong and durable inuse ari'd orna'mental in appearance.
The device is so constituted that it may be readily and easily-permanently attached a or secured driven through thewooden parts of the receptaclewithout danger of splitting .the' same and without the necessity of prior drilling; This is accomplished by having penetrating-prongs so disposed that they lie lengthwise .of or parallel to the-grainof the wood. The present. invention mayrbe advantageously employedforattaching aJbail-like or inverted U-shaped type of handle4to a-receptacle, and in such application "a separate. handle-attaching device is provided for each lend'fof: the handle. Each such -handle-attaching': device is .constituted, in the main, of a drawn sheet metal shell structure 'havingl penetrating prongs integrally formed with the side edges of the shell structure. The shell structure is so fashioned or formed as to comprise tubular end posts and an integral, depressed, central connecting structure. The outer end walls of the end posts are sloped upwardly and inwardly whereas the inner end walls thereof are formed with alined, vertically extending, oblong openings. A pivot pin, which has its intermediate portions fitted or received in an opening in one end of the handle, is interfitted with the opposed openings of the inner end walls of the end posts of one of the handle-attaching devices. The lower margins of the openings in the inner end walls of the end posts are provided with fulcrums. The construction is such that the pivot pin with its intermediate portion fitted in the handle may have one end inserted through one of the openings ljclai ns. Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement,

Referring to the drawing, the reference character W designates a Wall of a suit case, or other receptacle, which may be constituted largely of wood although it may be covered in any suitable way (not shown). The wall W is equipped with two handle-attaching devices, designated at H and H. These handle-attaching devices are of identical construction so that a single descrip: tion will serve for both.
As shown in the drawing, each handle-attaching device comprises generally a drawn sheet metal shell or stamping, designated as a whole at S. A pivot pin P is combined with each of the shells S and has its intermediate portion interfiltted with openings in the end of a bail-like hand e B.
Each shell S is so formed or fashioned as to provide tubular end posts It and II. These end posts It and ll are of identical construction and they are integral with, a depressed central connecting structure 12; The posts H] and II are tapered and have their outer end walls l3 sloping or inclining inwardly and upwardly. 'The bottom of the shell structure is open. The tops of the endposts are closed. In the inner or confronting end walls of the post openings M are provided. Theseropeningsextend vertically of their end posts, are of 'ob10ng 'shape, as shown in Fi ure 3, and are alined with each other. The lower, margin of each opening :4 is provided with a ledge or fulcrum l5.

4 In assembling each pivot pin R with its end post, it is first interfitted with the opening in its end of the handle. One end of the pivot pin P is then inserted through an' opening Him the manner, shown in Figure 2. When so inserted,
