HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24, 1910.
Application filed August 18, 1909. Serial No. 513,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEMIEUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashburn, in the county of Bayfield, State of Wisconsin, have invented an Improvement in Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class of handles for trunks and the like, in which the handles proper are foldable, and
when required for use are extended or drawn out.
My invention is embodied in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a trunk or box provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the attachment on the line 22 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
My improved attachment comprises an angle-iron 1, provided with a socket 2, a handle 3, which is pivoted in said socket, and a spring 4: arranged in the socket in rear of the handle, for holding it in retracted or extended position. The angleiron 1 is secured to the angle .formed by a side and end of a trunk, chest, box, or the like. The attachment is effected by means of screws, and the edges of the iron are preferably scalloped, or of other ornamental form. Midway of its length, the iron 1 is provided with a socket port-ion 2 which is of suitable length and form to adapt it to receive the handle 3 when in the folded position shown in Figs. 1, 2. The handle is pivoted at- 5 in the upper portion of the recess, and behind it is located a plate spring 4:, which bears on the cam-like projection 3 of the handle, whereby it is held normally in the retracted position or may be held in the extended position shown by dotted lines Figs. 1 and 2 and full lines Fig. 3. The angle of the trunk or other receptacle is of course recessed as required to receive the socket 2 of the angle-iron.
The body of the handle 3 has a longitudinal recess or groove, and the adjacent side of the iron 1 is cut away to expose a portion of the groove and thus facilitate the application of the fingers to the handle, for drawing it out of the socket and raising it to the position indicated in the drawing. In such position it projects substantially horizontally from the end of the trunk or box, and may then be readily seized for lifting the trunk. In such case the handle bears against a shoulder 1 formed at the upper end of the socket 2. Thus the lifting strain or leverage on the handle is borne by its pivot 5 and the aforesaid shoulder 1 The handle 3 is preferably curved slightly to facilitate the grip or hold thereon.
It will be understood that, in practice, each of the four corners of a trunk or other receptacle will be provided with my improved attachment. The angle-iron 1 not only serves for support and reception of the handle, but also strengthens and protects the angles of the same.
What I claim is:
1. The improved trunk attachment comprising an angle-iron having an inwardly projecting socket, a handle pivoted in the upper portion of the socket and adapted to be raised and adjusted in horizontal position in contact with the upper portion of sald socket, and a spring arranged in the, socket in rear of the pivot end of the lever, upon which it bears and thereby holds it normally in retracted position within the socket or supports it in the horizontal position as required for use, substantially as described.
2. The improved trunk attachment comprising an iron adapted for application to the trunk body and provided with a socket projecting inwardly and having one side thereof cut away, a handle pivoted in the upper portion of the socket and lying normally within the latter, but with a portion thereof exposed to view, and a spring for holding the handle in the normal retracted position, substantially as described.
GEORGE LEMIEUX.
