Description

March 12, 1929. w. J. LEACH 1 705369 TWI STING DEVICE Filed March 23 1928 INVENTOR WM Ame/f ATTOR N EYS Patented Mar. 12, 1929.
WILLIAM J. LEACI-I, on BURLINGTON, WISCONSIN.
' TwisrING DE ICE,
Application filed March-23, 1928.- Serial No, 264,080.
My invention relates to improvements in twisting devices, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a twisting device in which improvements over my Patent No. 1,605,958, issued November 9, 1926, are embodied.
A "further objectis to provide a twisting device in which the body portion comprises two sections hingedly secured together, and in which tho'handles are secured to one 01 said sections, thereby providing a device.
which is convenient to handle and relativel durable in construction.
A further object is to provide a device'of the type employing a two-piece die in which means is provided forautomatically opening the device, whereby the sections of said die will be separated.
Other objects and advantages will'appear in the following Specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention. is illustrated in the acconr' pany drawings, forming part of this applicaticn, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation ofmy'device, Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2--ot Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a view showing a pair of the devices mounted upon a. tube preparatory to twisting the latter.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a body portion 1 having sockets 2 therein. A movable body portion 3. is hingedly secured at 4; to the portion 1. A spring 5 is provided for automatically moving the portion 3' into the dotted line position when a locking device 6 is moved fromthe full line position into the dotted line position.
The body portions 1 and 3 are provided with a transverse substantially rectangular opening, for the purpose of receiving a die comprising a pair of sections 8'.
tions 8-are slightly thinner than the portions 1 and 3 so that the die sections may be sup-' ported within a groove 9 provided in the portions 1 and 3, see Figure 2. I
The sections 8 areprovided with intersecting openings 10 within which a tube 11 may be disposed. The sections 8 are removably twisting The die secppo ted within g ooves 9 by means of spring-pressed ball members 12. Handles 13 are disposed within the-sockets 2.
. Fromthe foregoing description of the varisrorr cs;
ous parts of the device, the operation thereof maybe readily understood. In Figure 3,1 have shown a pair of the twisting devices applied to the tube 11. o In operation when it is d'esiredto twist a tube, for instance, the device may be secured to the latter by moving the lockingdevi'ce 6 into the dotted line position, whereupon the spring 5 will automatically move the hinged portion 3 into the dotted line position. Atthis time, the sec-Q tions 8 are separated, since one of these sections moves with the portion 8 and the other is removably retained by the portion 1.
The device is now secured to the tube 11 by moving theportion 3 into contact with the portion 1 and securing the portions together by means of the locking device 6. Whenit is desired to removethe die sections 8, the de vice is opened up, whereupon the sections 8 may be removed by the hand by reason'of the spring-pressed ball members 12. I-c'laim: I A twisting device comprising a body portion, a movable' body, portion hingedly secured to said body portion, a locking device for loclcing the movable body portion with respect to said body portion, said locking device being arranged to entirely disengage the movable body portion for releasing the'latter, spring means .lor n'ioving said movable body portion away fron'r said body portion when said locking device is released, said body portion and the inovablebody portion-being provided with transverseopenings arranged to define a single o iening when-themovable body portion is locked to said bodyportion, a
two-piece die, one of said die portions being slidably disposed-withinthe opening in said movablebody portion and the other of said die portions beingslidably disposed in the opening of said body portion, and yielding
