BOOK COVER Filed Aug. 16, 1 940 INVENTOR. A4 LEN 5. dPz/vcm';
Patented Dec. 10, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a book cover and has for its principal object the provision of a device which can be quickly and easily placed on any book of any type or size; which will protect those portions of the cover subjected to the hands of the readers; and which will provide a bookmark.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efficiency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View illustrating the book cover in place on a book.
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof in place on a book.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the complete cover in the open position, looking toward the inner face thereof.
at Ill.
The improved cover comprises two similar side members. Each member consists of a cover sheet of flexible material ll, such as leather, to which an inner flexible flap I2 is secured along its vertical front edge and along its bottom to receive the forward lower corner of the binding of the book [9. The sheets II are inclined upwardly at their bottoms from the point of connection with the flap l2 as shown at M.
The two sheets II are tied together at the back by means of a lacing I5 of elastic cord or similar material. The extremities of the. cord I5 are brought together within a sliding sleeve it. A bookmark consisting of a strip of flexible material I! is secured to the upper portion of one of the sheets II.
In use, the two covers of the book H] are slipped into the pockets formed by the sheets I I and the flaps l2, as shown in Figure 1. If the book is a relatively thin one, the lacing i5 is pulled tight and the excess lacing is accommodated by sliding the sleeve I6 upward therealong. All ordinary variations in thickness of the books are accommodated by the natural elasticity of the cord l5, so that the two sheets will be snugly clamped to the book binding. The cut away por- In the drawing a typical book is illustratedtions I l have been found to be important in that they act to cause the sheets to be pulled snugly against the corners of the book without wrinkling. The height of the sheets H is less than the height of an ordinary book so as to 5 leave the title of the book exposed as shown at l8.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, 10 Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A book cover comprising: two similar sheets 15 of flexible material; a flap secured along the forward vertical edge of each sheet and extending inwardly over its inner face, said flap being secured along its bottom edge to said sheet; and adjustable lacing securing the two sheets to- 20 gether along their rear Vertical edges.
2. A book cover comprising: two similar sheets of flexible material; a flap secured along the forward vertical edge of each sheet and extending inwardly over its inner face, said flap being se- 25 cured along its bottom edge to said sheet; and adjustable lacing securing the two sheets together along their rear vertical edges, said lacing being formed of elastic material to act to constantly pull the two sheets toward, each other 30 across the back of a book.
3. A book cover comprising: two similar sheets of flexible material; a flap secured along the forward vertical edge of each sheet and extending inwardly over its inner face, said flap being 35 secured along its bottom edge to said sheet; adjustable lacing securing the two sheets together along their rear vertical edges; and a slidable member carried near the extremities of said lacing through which the latter may be pulled 4 to adjust its effective length.
4. A book cover comprising: two similar sheets of flexible material; a flap secured along the forward vertical edge of each sheet and extending inwardly over its inner face, said flap being 45 secured along its bottom edge to said sheet; and adjustable lacing securing the two sheets together along their rear vertical edges, the lower edges of said sheet being inclined upwardly from their points of connection with said flaps. 50
