The present invention relates to improvements in book protectors.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved book protector provided with means for conveniently marking the pages of a book.
A further object is to provide a book protector which may be used with books having a range of sizes, which book protector is provided with conveniently operable means for marking the pages of a book.
A further object is to provide a combined book cover and page marker employing readily replaceable elastic cord means for marking the pages of a book.
A further object is to provide a combined book protector and page marker which is simple and sturdy in construction, cheap to manufacture and convenient to use.
A further object is to provide an improved book protector and page marker well adapted to meet the needs of ordinary service.
Further objects will appear as description proceeds.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating one embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a bottom edge view of the structure illustrated in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken along the plane 3-3 of Figure 1.
According to the illustrated embodiment of the present invention, a sheet of relatively heavy material may be utilized to provide the back wall,
side walls, and the flaps of the book protector. y
Such a sheet of material is indicated by the numeral iii and is scored along the lines l8a-l8a to provide the back wall it and swinging side walls 2t2il. The edges of the side walls 282ll are folded over at the regions indicated by the numerals ZE-ll to provide flaps 22-22 adapted to engage the inside surface of the covers of a book. Said flaps lie in approximately parallel relationship with the remainder of their corresponding side walls. The longitudinal edges of the protector are indicated by the numerals lab-28b. The swinging side edges are defined by the folded over portions Zl-Zl.
Adjacent to the longitudinal free edges 2323 of the flaps ti -22 are the socket portions 2l72 l of separable fasteners adapted to co-operate with the stud portions 225 of said separable fasteners, which stud portions are carried by the main portions of the side walls 26-28. Said separable fasteners, consisting of the members 24-25, are located adjacent to the upper and lower edges of the combined book cover and page marker. Adjacent to each folded edge 2! is a button 26 carried by the corresponding flap 22. A piece of elastic cord 21, having a loop 28 at each of its extremities, is supported at each of its ends by a corresponding fastener portion 24, and is supported at its mid-portion by the button 25.
In using the illustrated embodiment of the present invention, the covers of a book, not illustrated, may be inserted in the pockets provided by the flap 22. Said flaps will engage the covers of the book with suificient friction to hold the book against accidental displacement. The pages at the left side of the book and the pages at the right side of the book will be held down by the elastic cords 272l. It will be a simple matter for the reader, when he desires to turn a page, to slip that page out of engagement with the corresponding elastic 2i andslip it under the elastic 2? of the opposite side of the book holder. As long as this practice is followed, the pages of the book will be marked at all times and the book may be closed and opened again without necessity for the reader to think of changing any book marking means.
The invention has the advantage of cheapness of manufacture and has the further advantage that either the lower or the upper portion of each piece of elastic cord Zl may be utilized for ordinary book marking purposes while the upper portion may be utilized for indexing. In other words, with the covers of a book located under the flaps 22-22 between the fasteners 2425, 24-425 (which carry the loops 28), the upper and lower portions of each elastic cord 2'! may be used as book markers, making four book markers in all; that is, the fasteners 24-25, 24-25 are located above and below the respective top and bottom edges of the protected book, leaving the top and bottom portions of each elastic cord 2'! available for page marking functions. This advantage is of importance particularly when the reader is studiously reading the book inasmuch as he can conveniently mark any four pages for future reference.
Though a certain preferred embodiment of the present invention has been described in detail, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
