BOOK COVER OR PROTECTOR.
applicati@ fried January 29, 1927. serial No. refines.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a book cover or protector which may be readily applied, which is so constructed that one size of protector is capable of being used with. books of different sizes, and in which the flanges or portions extending over the edges of the book covers and onto the side faces thereof are resiliently strained towards each other and toward the inside faces of the covers so asto hold the protector' securely in place.
A further object is to provide means whereby ordinai'y rubber bands may. be used for holding the protector in place and exerting the aforesaid strain thereon.
A still further object is to provide a construction such that the strain exerted by the rubber bands will hold the protector snugly in place and closely fitting against the book. Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the laccompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a face view of a blank book covei or protector before the protector is applied; Fig. 2 is aface view of a book andthe protector, one wing of the protector being folded over and engaged with the cover` of the book, the other wing being'open;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section through one wing of the book cover and one of the reinforcements; y
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a portion of'one wing of the book cover, showing the modified form of band engaging reinforcement. l
In the drawings I have. illustrated a preferred form of my invention. The protector consists of an approximately rectangular blank of material such as cloth, light or heavy paper, or any other material suitablefor the purpose, which is yso formed as to provide a portion 10 which will fit against the back of the book and binding portions 11 on each side of the portion 10 which I shall hereafter identify as wings, these portions 11 being adapted to lit against the outer faces of the covers A of the book. The wings 11 have a width greater than the width of the vbook covers A and Aalength greaterthan the length of these covers so as to provide on each wing a portion 12 adapted to be fold? ed inward upon thek inner faceof the4 cover along the dotted line 13 in Figure. 1, and upper and lower portions 14 adapted to bel folded inward against the inner lface of the cover along the dotted line'15 in Figure 1.
The portion 10 is preferably extended to I form tabsl. which are adapted to be folded inward within the back of the book, .that is,
between the back and the joined ends of the printed sheets. This portion 10 is also provided with an opening 17 whereby the title of the book may be read.` y
Upon the margin of the portion or flap 12 of each wing 11 there is pasted or otherwise attached a folded reinforcing member 18, which is folded over'so as to provide two layers` embracing the portion 12. These three layers are perforated with registering apertures 18, therev preferably being two pairs of these apertures. The end portions 14 which areintended to loe folded inward over the top and bottom edge of the book covers are also reinforced by folded tabs 19 past-ed or otherwise attached to the parts 14 and perforated. i
Coacting with the cover or protector as described, are tabs 2O which may be made of relatively heavy material and which are In the useof this device,the book is laidk upon the blank illustrated in Figure 1, the side portions 12 are turned inward," and then the end portions 14 are lturned inward over these folded inside portions. Tabs'QO have been previously attached to the innerfaces of the book covers, as shown in Figure 2. An elastic band 25 is then threaded through two of the apertures in the tab 18 and through the apertures in the talos 19. Then the ends of the elastic band are `extended through the aperture 24 in tab 2O andthe bights of the band carriedk around` the neck 23 either once or twice to securely connect ythe'band withta-b 20. This operation puts lil , readilyaeeoinplishedl theuse of a' sinall hair pin. i i
