I in each UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFICE.
JOSEPH SORROW, 0F BOISE, IDAHO.
DOOR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Sonnow, acitizen of the United States, residing at oise, in the county of Ada and. State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the This invention relates to a door fastener of that class which are used by traveling salesmen, hotel guests, lodgers, etc. as a protection in looking a door.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and economical device of this class which may be conveniently carried in the pocket or suit case and which may be readily applied to the door from the inside of the room by the user and which may be removed when desired for further use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view showing the application of the device to a door. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the device, with the legs of the door-securing or locking member proper in dangling or ineffective position. Fig. 3 is a transverse or vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, with the door-securing member proper in horizontal or effective position.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the device comprises a flat or approximately rectangular attaching plate 1, provided at one end with the right angularly disposed pointed spur 2 which is adapted to penetrate into the inner face of the door casing when the door is closed. The attaching plate is further provided near its opposite end and side edge, with a pair of longitudinally spaced recesses 3 adapted to receive the legs as 4 of the door engaging member. The door engaging member shown is approximately U-shaped and has its central portion as 5 mounted to turn in the bearing 6 formed by-the inwardly bent portion of the bearing plate 7 pivoted upon the stud, or rivet '8 to the attaching plate at a point substantially centrally located between the recesses 3. The attaching plate is further provided with the outwardly bent portion forming the thumb piece 9, which facilitates the application or removal of the device.
In practice the attaching plate is ar- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 18, 1910. Serial No.

ranged against the door frame in the manner shown when the door is closed from the inside which pushes the spur 2 of the plate into the frame and thus the attaching plate is held in position. After this operation the legs of the door engaging member are swung into either the upper or lower pair of the recesses of the attaching plate to form a sto) which prevents the opening of the door from the outside, even were the lock of the door sprung.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of as defined in the appended this invention claims.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1. A door fastener of the class described comprising an attaching plate provided in one edge with a pair of longitudinally spaced recesses, a bearing plate pivoted to the attaching plate and a door engaging member of U-shipe form pivoted to the bearing plate and capable of having its legs swung into engagement with the recesses of the attaching plate.
2. A door fastener of the comprising an attaching curin spur at one end thereof, said attaching p ate being provided adjacent the opposite end with )airs of spaced recesses extending inwardly from the opposite side edges of the attaching plate, havin a loop portion adjacent one end and pivotadly connected with the attaching plate between said recesses, and a substantially U- shaped door engaging member hingedly mounted in said loop and adapted to be swung into engagement with the door, the legs of said U-shaped door engaging member being adapted to extend within the recesses upon either side of the attaching plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
