To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, WILLIAM ORCHARD Hai's, citizen of the United States, residing.

at Roosevelt, in the county of lilickitat and 5 State of' Washington, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Sash and Screen Fasteners, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention is an improved sash and screen fastener, and is primarily designed for -latching and locking swinging screens and the like, as well as sliding window saslies.

The present fastener is complete in itself and is ca' able of being applied wit-hout inaking any c iange in the window sash or screen, and is ca able of locking the sash open as well as closed? With these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination 0` and arrangement of parts as will be here- \.-inai`ter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being nderstood that changes in the forni, propor- 5 tioriasize and minor details may be made witliinithe scope of the claims without departingfrom t ie spirit or sacrificing any ot the advantages of the invention.

Referring first more articularly to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will e seen that the latch of the present invention includes a straight shank 1 terminating at one end in an enlarge- 0 ment 2, preferably circular in form and pierced by a central opening 3, thereby providing an eye for the reception of a support u on which the shank is adapted to swing. U on reference to Fig. 1 of thedrawing it will e seen that the fastener or latch is piv' otally secured to a slidingsash, such as shown of the sash tow lich it is secured by a suitable fastening S, preferably a screw, whereby the T-head is ofl'set laterally from the sash, and the entire latch is capable of swinging in a. plane substantially parallel with' the sash. For engagement by the fastener or latch there is provided a ilura-lity of keepers 9, one of which has been sliown in detail in Fig. 4 of tliediaiviiig. Each keeper is a flat metal plate having a central longitudinal slot or opening 10 and terminal perforations 11, the latter being adapted to receive suitable fastenings, whereby the keeper is secured upon the window frame in position to receive one end of the latch or fastener. It will of course be understood that a socket or recess 12 is formed in the frame in alinement with the opening 10 in the keeper, so as to receive the head of tlie latch. y

Then the lower sash is closed, one end of the head of the latch enga-ges a lower keeper so as to prevent opening of the sash. The sash can be held in various elevated positions by swinging the latch into' engagement with any one of a series of keepers applied to the window frame. The latch may be engaged with a keeper by swinging it above its ivotal su port as well as below the same. iiVhen use( in connection with a. sash which is balanced b sash weights the latch merely locks the sas i, but when used in connection with a sash which is not balanced the latch also serves to support the sash as well as to lock the same.
