INVENTOR6 sat res star-as 7 JOHN exnouon AND Trier res n. nasrrn, or rensa, OKLAHOMA.
WINDOW-Loon." I i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. ROUGH and THOMAS H. HAsrIn, citizens of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locking devices for windows and has for its object the provision of a device adapted to be associated with the upper and lower sashes of a window whereby to lock the sashes at any desired adjustment, either in closed or partially open position so that the window cannot be moved by a burglar or other unauthorized person on the outside, the device being furthermore so constructed'that when in position, with the sashes opening, if a sash should be closed or partially closed the lock will automatically rengage so that the sash cannot again be opened until the device is released from the inside.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is formed from a single piece of more or less resilient metal and which will therefore be extremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture as well as easy to use, efficient in service, and a distinct improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a pair of window sashes showing the device in position, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the device in side elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a portion of a window casing, B designates the parting strip, C designates the lower rail of the upper sash, and D designates the upper rail of the lower sash.
In carrying out our invention we provide a device indicated broadly by the numeral 10, formed from a single piece of sheet metal of a somewhat resilient nature. This sheet of metal is of elongated rectangular form and is bent intermediate its ends, as
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 12, 1920. SeriaI No. 416,417.
sl 1own at '11, into an acute angle to define diverging arms 12 and 13 and the arm 13 is again bent, as indicated at 14, to define a projection 15 disposed at a slightly acute angle with respect to the arm 13. The arm 12 terminates in a sharpened point 16 and the projection 15 is tapered, as shown.
Formed integrally upon one side edge of the sheet 10 is a lateral extension 17 which has one end formed with a penetrating tine 18.
In the use of the device it is so'placed that the arm 13 will be disposed uponthe top of the sash rail D with the projection 15 engaging against the face of the rail toward the upper sash. The device is of course placed at the extreme side of the sash rail D so that the extension 17 will overlie the parting strip B and the device is so arranged that the tine 18 will penetratingly engage the parting strip B and the point 16 penetratingly engage the side rail of the top sash, as clearly shown.
When the device is thus positioned it will be readily apparent that any attempt to pull down the upper sash or raise the lower sash will be frustrated as the device will serve as a lock. Furthermore, it will be readily apparent that the device cannot be reached and be dislodged by a person outside of thewindow so that the device is consequently burglar proof.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that we have thus provided a very simply constructed and inexpensive device which is easy to apply and which will efficiently perform all thefunctions for which it is intended.
While we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is of course to be understood that we reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described our invention, we claim: 7 j
A device of the character described comprising an elongated sheet of metal bent into acute angular form to define diverging arms, one arm being engageable upon the top rail of the lower sash of a window and terminating in a tapered extension engaging against the side of the rail toward the upper sash, the other arm terminating in a penetrating point engageable with the side rail of the upper sash, and a lateral extension formed on one side of said sheet and having its upper corner formed as a penetratingtine engageable with the parting strip of the window. V Y 10 In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
JOHNA. ROUGH.
THOMAS H. HASTIE.
