RUFUS D. ROGERS, JR,
PATENT OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
' WATER CLOSET'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,895, dated October 22, 1 895. Application filed July 15, 1895 Serisl No. 555,966- (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS D. ROGERS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at South Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Closets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in water-closets, and more particularly to waterclosets which are not supplied with running water for flushing purposes.
It consists in a suitable hopper adapted to be attached to the bottom of the seat-frame,
the bottom being open, but having flanges at the front and rear, a reversible curved pan pivotally mounted in the bottom of said hopper and having flanges on the sides adapted to engage one the upper side of one flange and one the lower side of the other flange on the bottom of said case, and means for automatically reversing said pan by the opening and closing of the seat-cover.
It further consists in certain details of construction which will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
In the drawings herewith, accompanying and making a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved wateroloset, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical crosssectional view of the same.
Same letters refer to like parts.
In said drawings, A represents a case or hopper which may flare somewhat upwardly, if desired. Said hopper is attached to the under side of the seat-frame B in any convenient manner. It has a rectangular opening 0 in the bottom, leaving at the front and rear flanges D and F, respectively. In each side of said hopper, near the bottom, is a curved rim H, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. Pivotally mounted in the frame of said hopper is a curved pan I, having on its front and back edges flanges Jand.
K, respectively. Above the seat-frame is a cover L, hinged to the frame, and mounted on the hinge-journal M extended is a sprocketwheel N, which is adapted to be turned by opening and closing of said cover. A corresponding Wheel N is mounted on a shaft 0, set in a hanger P and rigidly secured to the adjacent end of said pan. Connecting said sprocket-wheels is a sprocket-chain Q. The pan is mounted in the hopper in such manner that one of its flanges is above the flange in the bottom of the hopper and the other below, so that when the seat-cover is raised and the pan is open side up it closes the opening in the hopper, as seen in Fig. l; but when the seat-cover is closed it reverses the pan, and the flanges on the pan engage the flanges on the hopper in the reverse order. The flanges on the pan travel in close contact with the rims H and make a practically close joint.
The operation of my improved water-closet is apparent from the description already given, it being evident that the pan will be right side up when the cover is raised and re versed when the cover is down, completely closing the opening in the bottom of the hopper in either position. Its advantages are that it works automatically and excludes all odors, whether the cover be up or down.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- In a water closet, a hopper having an opening in the bottom and flanges at the front and rear, of a reversible pan pivotally mounted in the bottom of said hopper and having flanges adapted to engage, one on the top and one on the under side of the flanges on the bottom of said hopper, a pivoted cover, and means conmeeting said pan and said cover for automatically reversing, said pan by the raising and lowering of said cover, substantially as and forthe purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 2d day of July, 1895.
RUFUS D. ROGERS, JR.
