J. KINNEY.
GOMMODE. i No. 412,273. Ptnted ogm. 1889.
WJLVESSES IME/17029;
UNITED STATES JESSE KINNEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,273, dated October 8, 1889. Applieationled November 28, 1888. Serial No. 292,167. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
'Be it known that I, J Esse KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of 1Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Commodes, of which the'fol-v lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in commodes, slop-pails, dre.; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, whereby all the sanitary requirements are complied with, and in addition thereto a disinfectant-chamberis provided, in which a suitable disinfecting material may be placed, which .in the use of the article will prevent any danger of disease or the unpleasant odors which may arise from permeating the room, while at the same time the article is of simple construction, and
'. may be manufactured by workmen of ordi- I inner rini of the top of the pail.
nary skill, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical central' sectionV through a slop-pail to which my improved device is applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of my improved device. i
A is a pail of Vordinary construction-such as found in the market for water or slopsand this is provided with the usual handle B.
C is the seat of the commode, provided on the under side with a shoulder D to fit on the The under side of this seat is preferably provided With a rubber packing E to form a tight joint with the top of the pail.
F is a stop. or iiange, preferably provided with an eye-hole, and secured at the front of the seat, as shown, in such relation to the side of the pail as to prevent the front edge of the seat from tipping up when the cover G is thrown back. This cover is connected to the seat by the hinge H, and at its front end with any suitable spring-catch-such as I-securing it in its closed position. A rubber gasket J is also preferably interposed be tween the seat and the cover in making 'a tight joint between the parts.
K is a disinfectant-receptacle formed on the under side of the cover and detaehably secured thereto in any suitable manner, such as by the screw L. The under side of this receptacle I preferably provide with the perforations M.
The parts being thus constructed and arranged, the disinfectant-chamber K being filled with a suitable fine disinfectant, it is obvious that in closing the cover down quickly a small amount of the disinfecting material will be shaken out -through the apertures M into the pail below, and will thus act in the well-known manner of applying disinfectants. At the same time, the disinfectantbody being placed in the receptacle at the top of the pail, all vapors or odors arising from the interior of the pail must necessarily pass through or in close proximity to the disinfectant material, and will be acted on before they can pass into the room.
I do not desire to confine myself in the application of this device to the use of the disinfeeting-chamber, which is provided with perforations, as it is evident that with a suitable disinfectant placed in the receptacle in solid the same result will be achieved as with the use of the powdered disinfectant, although I prefer to use the powdered disinfectant, because of its greater efiiciency and thorough ness. It is also obvious that this same construction of receptacle may be applied to the ordinary Water-closet seats, and with equally favorable results. In using this in connection with a slop-pail I preferably provide such pail with a perforated iiange or shelf N, in which a suitable disinfectant material O may be placed to assist in disinfectin g liquids which may be put into the pail.
A pail thus constructed is of especial advantage for hospitals and in sick-rooms and other places where slops or other odensive material is to be carried, andy it will be found economical and usefulin preventing the unpleasantness and danger arising from the use of the ordinary constructions of such devices.
A slide I maybe employed to close the perforations when it is not desired to discharge the disinfectant.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination, with the pail A, formed near its upper edge with an inwardly-inclincd'annular portion and horizontal annular flange above said inclined portion, of the seat C on said horizontal portion and provided Wit-h the outwardly and downwardly inclined stop-flange F parallel with said inclined portion, and the cover G, hinged to 1o the seat at a point dialnetrically opposite said ilange and carrying adisinfectant-rcceptacle, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my sign ature, in presence of lnwo witnesses, this 6th day of November, 1888.
JESSE KINNEY.
