MORISFISCHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COVER FOR WATER-J-CLOSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,982, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed October so, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORIS FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Water- Olosets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cover for water-closets by which disinfectant is supplied to the bowl of the water-closet Whenever the cover is closed downwardly on the seat; and the invention consists in the combination, with a water-closet seat, of a cover hinged to the same, a packing-ring projecting at its inner edge into the opening of the seat, and a perforated disinfectant-receptacle attached to the under side of the cover and adapted to contact with the packing-ring and close the opening of the seat. 7
Theinvention consists, further, in tapering the sides of the disinfectant-receptacle, and in the application thereto of aband of packing material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved cover asapplied to a water-closet. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modified construction of the cover and its disinfectant-receptacle; andFig. 4is a vertical transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bowl of a water-closet of any approved construction, B is the seat of thesame, and G the cover, which is hinged to a strip 1) at the rear part of the seat B, said cover being held in open position by means of a gravity.- catch G, which drops by gravity over the front of the cover when the same is in raised position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. To the under side of the cover 0 is applied a perforated receptacle D, which is preferably made of any suitable sheet metal and which is either inserted into a recess or depression at the under side of the cover and secured thereto by suitable fastening-screws d, as shown in Fig. 2, or by means of a metallic screw-thread at its edge into a correspondingly-threaded rim attached to the cover, or the recess in Serial No. 735,240. (No model.)
the cover may be entirely dispensed with and the receptacle D provided with an exterior flange d, which is attached by means of screws d to the cover, as shown in Fig. 4. The receptacle is provided with perforations over its surface and with a perforated central removable portion D, which is either hinged at its lower edge to the receptacle and locked thereto by a catch 9 at its upper end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or the same is connected therewith by a bayonet-joint and removed or replaced by means of studs d lo cated at diametrically-opposite points of the removable portion D, or the removable portion may be applied thereto in any other suitable manner. The interior of the perforated receptacle D is charged with suitable disinfectant, preferably in grain or powder form, which is placed directly in the same or in a suitable bag which permits the gradual discharge of the same.
The circumference of the disinfectant-receptacle D may be provided with a band H of elastic packing material, so that the receptacle fits tightly into the opening of the seat B. The receptacle D may, however, be-
made so as to fit without any packing material into the seat, if desired, as shown in Fig. 4. In order to secure the tight fitting of the receptacle in the seat-opening, the sides of the receptacle are preferably not perpendicular to the cover, but inclined, and the seatopening may be provided with a corresponding taper, as shown in the figures. A packing-ring f is attached to the under side of the seat in such a manner that the inner circumference of the ring projects beyond the opening in the seat, so that when the cover is closed the disinfectant-receptacle D will fit into the opening of the seat and be tightly surrounded by the inner projecting edge of the elastic ring f, so that no vapors can escape from the closet and so that none of the chemical disinfectant can escapelto the outside of the bowl.
The jarring of the receptacle produced when the cover is closed on the seat causes the discharge through the perforations-of the receptacle of a small quantity of the disinfectant-powder into the bowl of the waterclo's'et. In this manner the disinfectant is freed and neutralizes any obnoxious vapors that may arise from the Water-closet and keeps the same in good and clean condition. When the cover is raised, it is held against the wall and against the tension of the springhinges, by which it is retained on the seat, by the gravity-catch Gr. A new quantity of disinfectant can be supplied from time to time by removing the central perforated portion D of the receptacle, and the entire receptacle may also be removed from time to time whenever it may be desired to clean the same of any adhering dirt or other impurities, although this is only necessary at considerable intervals.
My improved cover is especially adapted for Water-closets of tenements and apartment-houses in which a large number of people live in a comparatively-small space and in which the effective disinfecting of the closets is of comparatively greater importance to the health of the occupants than in family residences and in the better class of apartment-houses, hotels, 850.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a Water-closet bowl, of a water-closet seat placed upon the same, a packing-ring secured to the under side of the seat and extending over the edge of the bowl, a cover hinged to the seat, and a perforated disinfectant-receptacle secured to said cover and adapted to pass through the opening of the seat and press the packing-ring against the edge of the bowl, substantially as set' forth.
2. The combination, with a water-closet bowl, of a water-closet seat placed upon the same, a packing-ring secured to the under side of the seat and extending over the edge of the bowl, a cover hinged to the seat, and
