To all QUIAOI/Z; it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD WEBB BUR- xnr'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at No. l2 The Linton, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain- Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grain doors and has for its object to provide a door that will prevent leakage when closed but which can be readily opened to empty the car.
Hitherto it has been found that with ordi nary hinges or hanging supports the grain pressure is so great that the door has become jammed and great difiiculty has been experienced in opening the door. My invention is designed to overcome this diflicult-y.
Reference is made to the annexed drawings in which Figure 1. shows a perspective view of the door from the inside of car. Fig. 2. shows the upper end of hinge. Fig. 3. shows the lower end of hinge. Fig. 4:. shows the closing edge of door, viewed from the outside.
The door A. consists preferably of a corrugated sheet with flat edges. On one of these edges two half round bars are riveted and with extensions of the bar E. above E and below E form the pivoting portion of the door. Let into the edge of the door post B. is a quarter circle groove B suitably faced with metal B which forms the seat of the bar E. a. cap F let into the car floor F. accommodates the lower end E of the bar E. The loop 13*. retains the upper end E of the bar E in the groove B 011 the opposite edge of the door two or more lugs A A extend outwardly. The door post C. is provided with projections C G on which the lugs bear when the door is closed. Near the edge of the door A, on which the lugs A A are, is a hinged flap D. which extends beyond. the lugs 13, A and bears on the door post C. when the door A, is closed.
In its normal position the door A, rests on the car floor F. Its lower ed e forms a sealed contact with the floor. The bar E, fitting accurately in the groove B provides I a sealed hinge while the flap D, covering the opposite edge of the'door A, and the lugs A $1 prevents leakage at that point.
The bar E, is adapted to have a limited vertical sliding movement in the groove B, when the door A, is raised vertically. The lugs and projections are so proportioned that the lugs are freed when the door is raised a short distance.
The operation is as follows :lVhen the car is filled with grain the door is held firmly in position. In order to open itthe operator pries up the door from the outside. The bar slides up in its groove and the lugs slide upward on the projections of the door post. llhen the lugs reach the spaces the door swings open, outwardly.
it is obvious that the door may be swung inwardly into the car; also, that when the door is swung outwardly the flap D will swing inwardly automatically due to its engaging the lugs A, A
Having now described my invention and its method of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a grain car door hinged to the door frame and being mounted for vertical movement, a projection on the door, a projection on the door frame, a flap hinged to the door and overlapping said projections, said project-ions being normally engaged and being adapted to disengage when the door is moved vertically.
