T. P. NELSON,
HINGE.
' APPLIOAT'IO DEC 6, 1910.

THEODORE F. NELSON, OF SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
HINGE. 1. 3-?
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 6, 1910.
Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Serial No. 595,921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forthwith reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical, strong and durable hinges especially designed for permanent connection with shipping-case covers to be readily detachable with the same from the cases.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a cross-section of a fragment of a shippingcase and a cover for the same connected by a hinge in accordance with my invention, the cover being swung down on the case to close the same; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the case and a hinge-member therewith, the section being indicated by line 2-2 in Fig.1; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the hinge, and Fig. 4C, a plan view of a peculiarly fashioned plate constituting a blank for the case-member of said hinge.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 5 represents a side wall, 6 an end wall and 7 the cover of a receptacle such as a shipping-case. The wall 5 of the receptacle is provided with a seat 8 for what is shown as an outer flange extremity 9 of one member of my improved hinge, this flange being preferably at a right angle to the adjacent portion of said hinge-member. This hinge- ,member is preferably provided with a spring-tongue projection 10 that extends over the exposed edge of the wall 5 of said receptacle under tension to clamp said hinge-member in place, said edge being preferably indented to engage a snap-bend of said tongue. The aforesaid hinge-member is also provided with a pair of ears 11, each having a knuckle extremity 11 engaged by the hinge-pintle 12 that extends through a knuckle 13 of a strap-member 13 of the hinge, the knuckle of the strap being shown interposed between the knuckles of said ears of the first named member of said hinge.
The strap-member 13 of the hinge is permanently secured to the inner side of the cover 7 by screws, nails or other fastening means, suitable clearance for the ears 11 of the other hinge-member being provided, and the flange 9 of said other hinge-member has slip-fit in the seat 8 provided in the wall 5 of the receptacle so that said cover and hinge may be removed together from said receptacle.
It is preferable, as herein shown, to provide the first named member of the hinge with an inwardly extending right-angle flange 14 by which it is stiflened. This flange may also serve to gage setting of the hinge by being placed to have its vertical portion in contact with the adjacent end wall 6 of the receptacle, and being thus disposed it will prevent any twisting movement ofthe cover that would tend to displace said hinge. The horizontal portion of said flange is in opposition to the strap-member 13 of the hinge when the cover 7 is swung down on the receptacle.
The receptacle member of the hinge is preferably made from a single plate of suitable metal cut as shown by Fig. 4C, and bent on planes indicated by dotted lines in the same showing to form the flanges, tongue and ears aforesaid, said tongue being a pro jection of the horizontal portion of the flange 14 and extending between the cars 11 of said hinge-member when the formation of the same is completed.
In practice a pair of hinges will be employed in permanent connection with a cover for a receptacle such as is herein specified.
I claim:
1. A hinge for permanent connection with a cover of a receptacle and having one of its members provided with a flange engageable with a seat for the same in a wall of the receptacle, and a spring-tongue projecting from said member to extend over an edge of said wall.
2. A hinge for permanent connection with a cover of a receptacle and having one of its members provided With an inner compound the county of Shelooygan and State of Wisvertical and horizontal flange and With a consin in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
lower outer flan e this outer flange bein for detachable eiigagement With a seat to? THEODORE NELSON 5 the same in a Wall of the receptacle. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I J OHN C. DIEsTELHoRsT, have hereunto set my hand at Sheboygan in v H.- J. NEUENS.
