THOMAS CORSCADEN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANLEY WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,308, dated April 1'?, 1894. Application filed August 21, 1393. Serial No. 483.597. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it' may concern,.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS CoRsoADEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in l loose pin hinges, and the object ot' my improvement is to provide cheap and etticient means for securing the removable pin against accidental removal.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the hinge knuckles and one ornamental tip, the other parts of the hinge being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my hinge with the ornamental tip and stop washer removed, and Fig. 3 is a detached plan view of said stop washer.
The leaves A A and their knuckles B may be formed in the ordinarymanner of forming the same in loose pin hinges. I form the loose pin or removable pintle C with one ornamental tip 4 permanently secured thereto in any proper manner leaving the pintle long enough to extend through all of the knuckles and with a short threaded portion 5 projecting beyond the knuckles at one end as shown in Fig. 1. I also form a atted or angular portion 6 adjacent to said threaded end, the same being of some irregular form as shown.` Upon this latted or angular portion I place `a stop washer 7, the slot or opeuingin which,
is of a form to correspond with the flattened or angular portion of the pintle. On the end of this pintle I secure the second ornamental tip 8, the same being interiorly threaded to screw upon the threaded end ot' the pintle as shown. I prefer to have this threaded tip screwed down against a shoulder so as not to pinch the stop washer 7 between it and the end knuckle so that it may be screwed up hard without binding the hinge. When thus secured it will not become accidentally detached. If in Working the hinge any friction is exerted upon the stop washer with a tendency to rotate it, the pintle will be rotated therewith by reason of the angular opening .in the stop Washer and corresponding shaped portion of the pintle, thereby preventing the ornamental tip from being accidentally unscrewed. f
I claim as my invention- The herein described removable pintle hinge, the same consisting of the leaves and knuckles secured together by the pintle C, said pintle having at one end a threaded projection and angular portion, the stop washer 7 ttted to said angular portion and the ornamental tip 8 screwed on the outside of said stop washer, substantially as described and for the. purpose specified.
THOMAS CORSCADEN.
