To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Anrnonr M. Anznvino, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning, State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Receptacles; and I do hereby cleclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in garbage receptacles, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the garbage can be emptied thereinto in a convenient manner, and when in the receptacle, the odor therefrom will be prevented from escaping.

A further object of the invention 1S to provide a garbage receptacle so constructed that the garbage can be first emptied into a hopper after which the top of the hopper is closed and the bottom opened so that the garbage will pass from the hopper into the receptacle.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for actuating the hopper to discharge the contents thereof into i the receptacle.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptacle so constructed that it will be practically airtight so as to prevent odors escaping therefrom.

was these and other objects in new, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the receptacle, and 2 the hopper, said hopper having a transverse partition 3 which forms in conjunction with the adjacent wall of the hopper a compartment l in which operates the beam 5, said beam having pivotally connected to its ends links 6, said links being 2 is a sectional view on line EZ- A of pivotally connected at their lower ends to the hopper bottoms 7, said bottoms having their outer edges hingedly connected to the adjacent walls of the hopper and have their inner edges provided with rubberpacking strips 8, whereby when the bottoms are in their closed position the packing strips will contact with each other, thus producing an air tight joint at their meeting edges.

Extending into the compartment at is a crank arm 9, the upper end of which is pivotally connected centrally of the beam 5. The outer end of the crank arm 9 terminates in a hand lever 10, which when grasped and swung in one direction will move the beam 5 downwardly, thus swinging the hopper bottoms 7 to their open position. When pressure is released on the hand lever 10 the arm 9 thereof will swing upwardly under the action of the coil spring 11, which has its lower end connected to the arm and its upper end connected to the top of the hopper. As the arm moves upwardly the beam will also be moved upwardly and through the medium of the links 6 the bottoms 7 will be swung to their closed position.

Fixed to three sides of the hopper 2 are plates 12, which are inclined so that their lower edges will engage the rubber strips 12 carried by the hopper bottoms 7 so as to provice a tight joint to prevent odors passing through the hinged connections of the bottoms. It will be noted. that one of the strips of rubber will engage the lower edge of the partition 3.

The receptacle 1 has pivotally connected to its sides cam levers 13 which are so arranged that when the same are actuated they will engage the lower edge of the hopper 2 so as to force the same upwardly when it is desired to remove the hopper from the receptacle. It will be of course understood that the diameter of the lower end of the hopper is such that it will readily engage over the upper edge of the receptacle.

The hopper 2 has its top provided with a hingedly connected cover lat which can be readily raised upon grasping the handle 15 carried thereby so that garbage can be emptied into the hopper. After the garbage is emptied into the hopper the cover 14 is closed, after which the hand lever 10 is actuated to swing downwardly the hopper bottoms 7 so that the garbage will be transremovably connected to the receptacle, said 7 I-h0pper having hinged bottoms, a crank arm carried by one of the walls of the hopper,

a beam pivotally connected to the upper end of said arm, links pivotally connecting the beam and bottoms, means for swinging the arm downwardly to open the bottoms, and means for automatically actuating the arm to move the bottoms to a closed position.
