AUTOMATIC FLY-PROOF CLOSET-STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1914.
Application filed June 7, 1918. Serial No. 772,849.
Be it known that I, EDWARD, J. HALEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Jonesboro, in the parish of Jackson and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fly- Proof Closet-Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in dry closets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a closet in which the fumes arising from the excreta may escape and, at the same time, prevent insects from entering the excreta receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the excreta may be conveniently removed and the interior of the closet maintained in a sanitary condition.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a closure for the seat openings which will be maintained closed when not in use and which will be operated when the user assumes a position to occupy the same.
For afull understanding. of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying draw ings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings, 10 designates the receptacle or cabinet which may be of any suitable construction but which preferably consists of the front and rear walls 11 and 12, the end walls 13 and 14, and the bottom 15. The rear wall 12 is provided with an opening 16 disposed longitudinally thereof and which is normally closed by the door 17 provided with the screened panel 18. The door 17 is maintained closed by spring latch members 19, there being a latch member disposed on each of the end walls.
The excreta is received by a tray or receptacle 20 which is placed on the bottom 15, being placed within the cabinet through the opening 16. The top 21 of the closet, which is formed with openings 22, is stepped to provide seats at different heights. While two seats are illustrated, any number may be provided,'the construction operating as effectually with one or more than one seat.
Seat closures or lids 23 are hingedly supported on the top/and are adapted to close the seat 0 enings. -Each lid is provided with a bloc 24 to which is connected a link 25. A shaft 26 is supported by the to ad- ]acent its rear edge, the terminals 0 this shaft being disposed at right angles to its body ortion. The shaft is supported toyrotate, t e terminal 27 of the same beingdc onnected to the link 25, the shaft when rotated actuating the link to raise the lid. A link 28 is connected to the terminal 29 of the shaft. This link is connected to a lever 30 disposed at the side of the closet and supported at its terminal remote from the link 28 by brackets 31 mountedon the front 11 of the cabinet. This lever is actuatedby the treadle 32, the lever being bent to form a substantially U-shaped support for said treadle. A spring 33 connects the terminal of the lever 30 to which the link 29 is connected to the closet, the spring normally maintaining the lever disposed toward the rear of the closet.
When the treadle is depressed by the feet of the user of the closet as he assumes a position to occupy the seat, the lever will be drawn forward and the shaft 25 rotated to raise the lid 23. The lid will thus be maintained in raised position as long as the seat is occupied and the feet of the user rest upon the treadle. When the user steps off of the treadle, the spring 33 will draw the lever 30 toward the rear of. the closetand the lid 23 will then be brought in contact with the top to close the opening 22. The lid is preferably provided with a packing 34 of rubber which maintains an air tight joint and pre- 7 vents the escape of obnoxious fumes.
The many advantages of a construction of this character will be clearly apparent, as it will be noted that the closet may be easily and conveniently cleaned and that insects are prevented from entering the same. Attention is called to the fact that the seat openings are closed when not'in use and that vermin or insects cannot enter the closet through said openings. It will also be noted that the structure may be easily and economically manufactured, and that the various parts may be readily assembled.
What I claim is 1. A dry closet comprising a cabinet including front and rear walls, end walls, a top and bottom, there being a seat opening formed in the top, a lid hingedly connected to the top and forming a closure for said seat opening, said lid being formed with a straight edge, whereby it may assume a position perpendicular to the top and-constitute a back rest, a crank shaft pivotally mounted on the front wall of the cabinet, a treadle arranged on said crank shaft, the crank shaftbeing provided with an extension disposed parallel with the side wall of the cabinet, a crank shaft mounted on the top of the cabinet and having an operative connection with the lid,and a link connecting the extension of the first mentioned crank shaft with the second mentioned crank shaft.
2. A dry closet comprising a cabinet including front and rear walls, end walls, a top and bottom, there being a seat opening formed in the to a lid hingedly connected to the top and orming a closure for said opening, said lid being formed with a straight edge disposed to contact with the top when the lid is in open position, whereby it may form a back rest, a crank shaft pivotally supported on the front wall of the cabinet, a treadle mounted on said shaft,- said shaft being provided with an extension projecting rearwardlyof the cabinet, a crank shaft supported on the top of the cabinet and having a link connection with the lid, whereby the shaft when rocked in one direction will raise the lid, a link connection between the extension of the first mentioned shaft and the second mentioned shaft, and resilient means for normally maintaining the treadle which is supported by the first mentioned shaft raised and the lid inclosed position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
