REFUSE RECEPTACIJE.
Maasai,
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OsoAR Swnn'i, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Refuse Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-V scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates `to improvements in refuse receptacles such as ash, trash and garbage cansfone object of the invention being to so construct such a receptacle that it shall be safe against fire; so that it shall prevent intrusion by animals; so that its contents cannot be accidentally spilled; so that ashes or other refuse can be emptied thereinto without discomfort to the user, and so that the closure of the receptacle may be easily opened or closed without removal, securely fastened when closed and readily adjusted when opened to facilitate the introduction of refuse.
IVit-h these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as here-v inafter set foi'thl and pointed'out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view illustrating my invention. Figure Q is a sectional view, and Figui'e 3 is a plan view.
l represents a can or receptacle which may be made of metal and of any desired size suitable for receiving any character of refuse, such as ashes, trash and garbage.
The can or receptacle is provided with a closure 2 which is located somewhat below the top of the receptacle and is provided with pintles 3 at diametrically opposite points. These pintles project through horizontal elongated slots 4 in the wall of the receptacle and slightly below the upper edge of the latter. The slots 4 are disposed diainetiically opposite each other and in their lower walls, notches 5 are provided to receive the pintles 3. The cover or closure is thus hinged or pivotally supported axially within the upper portion of the receptacle Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jllll 20, 1922. v

and is normally prevented from turning in one direction by a latch 6- on said cover or closure and entering a slot 7 in the wall of the receptacle,-said cover or closure being normally prevented from turning in the` other direction by means-of a stop 8 projecting inwardly from the wall of thereceptacle.
It will he observed that when -rthe cover or closure is in normal position there will V be no danger of the contents being spilled from the receptacle in the event the latter should be overturned, and it will also hereceptacle also contains inflammable ma'-V terial.
The cover or closure may be readily unlatched and tilted to permit the introduction of refuse and to further facilitate the discharge of refuse into or from the receptacle, the cover or closure may be slightly raised to remove the pintles from the notches and then moved laterally to enlarge the opening in the top of the receptacle.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a receptacle of the character described, the combination of a body portion having diametrically opposite elongated slots near its top, the bottom wall of each of said slots having a notch intermediate of its ends, a
