UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN H. BRINKOP, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
COVER FOR BUCKETS, CANS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,474, dated July 15, 1890.
Application filed May 7, 1890. $erial No, 350,895. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BRINKOP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Buckets, Cans, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a removable cover or top adapted to be placed within a bucket, a milk-can, barrels, or tubs, or the like, which is constructed to act as a strainer, or may be manipulated to leave an opening entirely free for the liquid to be poured in.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan View; Fig. 2, a central vertical section. Fig. 3 shows the movable section swung aside to uncover the opening.
In the drawings, A is a rim or band of circular form adapted for insertion within the mouth of the can or bucket top. About midway of this rim a groove is formed extending peripherially around its inner side, and ust above this groove is secured a horizontal section B, extending half-way across the rim. A second half-section B is pivoted to the stationary section at 1, and is arranged to move when swung on its pivot beneath the stationary section and within the groove 2 in the rimside. A finger-piece or handle is provided on the movable section, and this abuts against the edge of the stationary section, and thus limits the movement in both opening and closing, and this opening and closing movement is controlled also by means of a spring 4, attached to a pin 5, beneath the movable section, and to the rim at 6, and the arrangement is such, as shown,tl1at the spring will hold the movable section in either its closed or open position, it being attached beside thepivot and extendingobliquely therefrom to the point 6. Both sections are perforated, and as they are located below the upper edge of the rim the device may be used as a strainer by inserting it within the can or bucket top, with the movable section closing the opening between the stationary part and the rim. hen it is desired to have an unobstructed opening for pouring the liquid, the movable section is swung aside, as in Fig.
It will be noticed that the formation of the groove 2 provides a projecting rib upon the outside of the rim, and this acts to limit the downward movement of the device in placing it in position to rest upon the upper edge of the can-top.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination, the rim having a groove in its inner side, the stationary section attached to the rim along the edge of the groove, and the movable section pivoted to the stationary section and having its edge within the groove, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the rim, the stationary section extending withinthe same, and the movable section pivoted to the stationary section, the said rim being formed with a groove to receive the edge of the movable section, said groove providing an exterior rib on the rim to support the same within the mouth of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. BRINKOP.
