COOKING-VESSEL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,246, dated March 9, 1880.

To all whom t may concern 4 lBe it known that I, WILLIAM Y. THOMSON, of Oyster Bay, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have'invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Vessels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is intended as' an improvement upon certain other improvements, forming the subject of two former patents issued to me October 15,1872, and March 4,1873, Nos. 132,334 and 136,467, respectively, and relates to that classof pots or kettles from which the liquid contents may be poured or strained through the cover without the same becoming detached.

Heretofore I have constructed such vessels with horizontal flanges extending partially around the inner circumference, near the upper edge of same, for the cover to rest upon, and with pins projecting inwardly just above said iianges, between which said cover, be#

ing formed with notches on one side for the pins to pass through, could be inserted from the top, and secured by turning` it partially round. These flanges and pins, on account of their position, being found difficult to mold perfectly, also to interfere with the process of grinding out the vessel and with the'proper cleaning of the same after being used, and this method of securing the cover being also found inconvenient, the object of this invention is to remedy these defects by a different application of similar devices, as hereinafter more fully described; and the improvement consists in arranging the flanges and locating the pins or substitutes therefor so that they do not proj'ect beyond the inner surface of vessel, and so that the cover may be more readily attached and detached.

A represents the body of vessel, which is formed with a perpendicular flange projecting above and encircling 'the upper and outer edge of same, the foremost portion, B, about one-half of said flange, extending slightly above the remaining or hindermost portion, B, as shown, a narrow ledge or shoulder intervening between its inner circumference and the interior of vessel-body A, but not extending beyond the surface of the latter, as shown by dotted circle in Fig. l, and more clearly by cross-section in Fig. 2. j

By a, a are represented two short horizontal iianges or lugs projecting inwardly from the foremost iian ge, B, on opposite sides of the vessel, slightly in advance ofthe center, as taken through the line of the ears, to which the ordinary top bail or handle is pivoted, not extending beyond the ledge aforesaid, but placed sufficiently above the same to allow the insertion of the cover, all fully shown in Figs. l and 2.

C represents the cover, formed with the handle D and hinged iap E, with perforations beneath the same; F, the ordinary top bail or handle, and Gr the additional side or tipping bail, pivoted to the inclined lugs b b, all as shown, and more fully described in aforesaid Letters Patent previously issued.

Vhen in operation, the cover O is placed in position from the side or rear of the vessel by passing it over the lower portion of the flange B', which allows it to be readily inserted between the lugs a a on the higher portion of the flange B and the ledge aforesaid.

When desirable to strain off the contents of the vessel the flap E is raised, when by lifting and holding the vessel suspended by the top bail, F, and tipping the same by the side bail, G, the liquids contained therein may be poured out through the perforations in the cover before mentioned, as also fully described in aforesaid Letters Patent, said cover being retained in position by means of the lugs a a during the operation.
