Description

(No Model.)
W. B. DEMING. ATTACHMENT FOR HINGBS.
No. 540,645. Patented June 11, 1895.
UNITE STATES ATENT Fries.
ATTACHMENT FOR HINGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,645, dated June 11, 1895.
7 Application filed November 1, 1894:. Serial No. 527,605- (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. DEMING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bentonville, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hinges;
= and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby the .strain upon the leaves of strap hinges at the knuckle may be relieved so as to prevent tearing the hinge and also whereby the longitudinal strain on the screws tending to withdraw same and loosen the hinge, is lessened.
The object further is to provide an appliance which can be adapted to hinges of common form and can be applied to hinges already in use.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in perspective of a sec tion of a post, showing a strap-hinge secured thereto and showing my attachment applied. The door or gate is not shown in this figure. Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of the post or j amb in side elevation, and showing the hinge in vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a detail of the front of the post, showing a portion of the leaves of the hinge with my attachment applied.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
A represents the gate post ordoor jamb, and B and B are the leaves of a strap hinge of well known construction, and provided with screw holes in the usual way. I
0 represents my improved attachment which will preferably consist of bar iron of greater width than thickness and which will first be bent edgewise into a U shape in which the distance between the stems will be approximately equal to the width of the hinge and then the lower part of the stems including the bar connecting the stems will be bent at right angles to the stems in the manner as clearly shown in the drawings. These stems will form the straps C of my device and will be provided with holes'by which the straps will be securely nailed or screwed to the post strain on the hinge will be largely sustained by my attachment which is calculated to support the strap and prevent its tearing and will take the direct pull such as is exerted on the screws when the gate is half open, off of the screws securing the hinge. The strain on the screws fastening my attachment to the post is at such times at right angles to their length and consequently will not loosen the device. My attachment may be made of malleable iron or wrought iron or of any other suitable material.
My device may be manufactured and sold with thehinges and applied when the hinges are first put on or it may be sold as an attachment to be applied subsequently.
I am aware that strap hinges have been reinforced by an additional overlyiifg plate formed integral with the material of the leaf and also of a separate plate riveted or otherwise secured to the strap and I am also aware that such a reinforcing plate having arms at right angles to the strap and adapted to be projected through the enlarged slot beside the pintle as shown in my Patent No.518,309, has been made, and such construction I do not claim in this application, but
What I do claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
Asa new article of manufacture, the removable device 0 for strengthening hinges and consisting of the bar 0 adapted to be placed transversely across the hinge. strap next to the knuckle and having its contacting face parallel with the outer face of the strap and the two straps '0 integral with the bar 0' and at right angles thereto and a distance apart at least equal to the width of the hinge and adapted to be secured to the face of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature post at right angles to, and adjacent to the in presence of two Witnesses. face of the post to which the hinge is fastened, the contacting faces of the strap being WILLIAM B. DEMING, 5 parallel with the inside face of the post or Witnesses:
jamb, substantially as described and for the T. O. TUCKER,
purposes specified. R. E. BRASHEAR.
