Description
L. WILLIAM.
ammi. APP'LICATIOEr FILED JAN. 13, 1910.
' lsepa ated UNITED STATES PATENT @itllitjhla EDWARD L. WILLIAM, O'F MOUNT STERLING, KENTUCKY.
HINGE.
, n To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD Lf WILLIAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Sterling, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to hinges of that character known as strap hinges, and has for its object' to provide certain improvements in the construction of the same as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a horizontal sectional view of a portion of a wooden building showing one of my improved hinges connecting a door thereof with the building wall. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail end view of the two parts of the hinge Fig. 4t is a view similar 'to Fig. l showing my improved hinge applied to a window shutter.
' Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawing the reference nunieral l denotes the wall of the building. and Q- the door.
My improved hinge is l'ornied ot two V-shapcd leaves, each comprising a narrow outer surface 3 on each side uniting at the outer end of the leaf and connected by an intermediate arched reiiiforeement i. 'l he leaves at their inner ends are projected at an angle to their body portions at 5 and are provided with a. removable bolt or pin receiving knuckles 6, 7. I prefer to unite the leaves by means of a bolt- 8, and to render the movement of the parts easier I interpose washers 9 between the adjacent ends of said knuckles 6, 7.
By my improved consti friction wherein the knuckles 't' and 8 are offset from the parts to which their leaves are united by the projections 5, it will be seen that the door 2 will be permitted, when open, to lie snugly against the outer wall of the building, even when the latter and said door are provided With battons 10. By forming the leaves of the hinge with the narrow outer surface 3, which forms the connecting surface with the wall and door, and which is apertured at intervals to receive the screws, and by providing the intermediate arched reinforcement 4, I not only materially strengthen Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 13, 1910.
Patented Mar. 3J, i910. Serial No. 537,853.
said leaves, but also provide, in a wide leaf, a comparatively narrow contact surface with the wood-work, thus reducing the covered surface and preventing the rotting ol the underlying wood-work through the at'- cumulation of moisture thereunder. A further advantage in the 'reinforcement 4t is that the projections 5 are firmlybraced thereby and may be projected materially without adding to the weight of the leaf. It will be observed by reference. to Fig. l that the projections 5 of the leaves are disposed at such an angle that when the hinge is closed a 'il-shaped space is left therebetween, which will not permit of an aceuniulation of ice or snow to interfere with the closing of the door.
In Fig. 4 I have shown my improved hinge used with a shutter ll, that leaf oi' the same which is fastened to the window frame 2 being niaterially shortened to lit the width of said frame. It willv be observed that my construction permits the window frame leaf of the hinge to be connected with the edge of said frame, instead of its inner face, whereby screws of an)v length may bc l i used to attach it. j Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:--- i l. A hinge, embodying leaves each formed i of a narrow outer surface adapted to contact with the part to which it is to be united, an intermediate arched 'reinforcement. an angular projecting .inner end against which said reinforcement abuis to brace the same, and knuckles formed at the outer edge ol' said projectinginner end.
Q. A hinge, enil'iodyiug leaves each formed of a narrow outer surface adapted to: contact with the part to which it is to be united, an intermediate arched reinil'orcement', an j angular projecting inner end against which ,i said reinforcement abuts to brace the, same. and knuckles formed at the outer edge of said projecting inner end. said arched reinforcement being broadest at its point of contact with the projecting inner end and taj'iering. both in height and width, toward its other. end.
In testimony whereof I aitix my signature lin presence of two witnesses.
