Be it known that I, HENRY G. BRIEL, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and State of The present invention relates to builders hardware and has particular reference to new and useful improvements in hinges and pintleretainers therefor. I

An object of my invention is to provide a hinge adapted for quick and easy disconnection to permit removal of a door when desired, the hinge being so constructed as to prevent unauthorized removal of the door when closed and locked.

My invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with screen doors and the like but I do not limit myself to its application to this use.

Another object of my invention is to provide a hinge of the class described having a new and improved construction of hinging portions and an improved form of pintle, whereby unauthorized removal of the pintle for taking the door off its hinges is prevented.

A further object of my invention is to provide a hinge of the class described, which is simple in construction, strong and durable, elfective in operation and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved hinge will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an in spection of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a hinge embodying the improvements of my invention, Fig. 2 is a top end view of the same, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 41 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 designate the leaves or coupled sections of my improved hinge, both of said sections having lugs 3 and 4 formed thereon in which openings 5 are provided to permit securement of Specification of Letters Patent.

the sections to a door and door jamb. Either of the sections may be applied to the door or to the jamb as desired, but I prefer to apply the section 1 to the door in view of the fact that this section carries the spring element hereinafter described as well as the pintle of the hinge. The section 1 is provided at its upper and lower end portions with rectangular tubular portions 6 and 7. The section 1 is also provided adjacent the portions 6 and 7 with recesses S and 9 adapted to receive cylindrical tubular portions 10 and 11, respectively, formed on the section 2 of the hinge. As best shown in Fig. 4.- the inner marginal edges of the sections 1 and 2 abut as indicated at 12 for an obvious purpose.

I provide a pintle for the hinge designated 13, said pintle having a squared portion 14 thereon and a head 15 provided with a vertically extending slot 16 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. The pintle is adapted to be inserted through the squared portion 6 and tubular portions 10 and 11 preferably projecting slightly below the squared portion 7. The squared portion 14 with the pintle 13 is to be received within the squared tubular portion 6 of the section 1 so that when the section 1 moves with the door the pintle will also move. In order to prevent removal of the pintle except when the door is open to a predetermined point I provide extensions 17 and 18 formed on the section 2, said extensions 17 and 18 being provided with lateral projections 19 and 20, respectively, one of which engages in the slot 16 when the door is at a predetermined angle depending upon the position of the slot 16. When the slot 16 and one of the projections 19 register the pintle may readily be withdrawn permitting removal of the door from the door jamb.

I provide spring means for maintaining the door in closed position, said spring means embodying a coil spring element 21, one end 22 of which engages the section 2 and the other end 23 being permanently connected to the section 1 by means of securing tongues 24: struck from said section. The extremity of the portions 23 is angularly bent as at 25 and a securing tongue 26 struck from the section is engaged therewith. It will be seen that when the door is removed from the jamb the coil spring element is car ried therewith as Well as the pintle so that it is unnecessary to remove the entire hinge from the door Whenever the seasons change, such as is the common practice at the present time in using screen doors and the like.

From the above description taken in connection With the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and While I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure. I desire that it be understood that I may make such changes on said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
