United States Patent LOCKING MEANS FOR OUTWARDLY SWINGING DOORS AND WINDOWS Wendolyn F. Gakle, Bay City, Mich.

1 Claim. (Cl. 16-137) This invention relates to hinges for doors and windows and the like, and more particularly to locking means which prevent burglars, vandals and the like from entering outwardly swinging locked doors or windows by simply removing the hinges from the door or window or the hinge pins from the hinges themselves.
As is well known, it is a simple expedient to remove hinges which are secured to the outer faces of the doors, windows and frames with screws, or to remove the hinge pin from hinges in which the leaves are concealed in mortises provided in the inner edge of the door or window and the side of the door or window jamb or frame. Unauthorized persons equipped merely with a screw driver or similar tool have, in this manner, been able to unhinge a door or window and thus obtain access to locked homes and buildings in which valuables were stored.
One of the prime objects of my invention is to provide simple and effective means incorporated directly in the hinge or auxiliary thereto, which retains the inner edge of the door or window in locked position, even though the hinges and/ or hinge pins have been removed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means of the type described which can be readily mounted in position by a layman, with ordinary tools, and which will not interfere with the normal opening and closing of the door or window.
Another object of the invention is to provide locking means of this type which is automatically swung into locking relation with the door or window frame each time the door or window is closed.
A further object of the invention is to design locking means of simple, practical and durable construction which in one embodiment is adaptable to hinges which are mounted in mortises provided in the side wall of the jamb or frame and the inner edges of the door or window, as well as to hinges which are simply mounted on the outer surface of the frame and door or window.
A still further object of the invention is to design a thoroughly practical and reliable locking means of the type described which can be incorporated in conventional hinges with little addition to the manufacturing cost thereof, or which can also be manufactured as a separate unit and at low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion, and minor details of construction, without departing from the spirit, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
For the sake of convenience, the various embodiments of the invention will be described throughout the remainder of the specification and the claim as applied to a door, but it is to be understood that the device is Patented July 2, 1957 ICC as readily applicable to windows and closures of various kinds.

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary, front elevational view showing a portion of a door frame and door connected by a hinge which incorporates my novel locking means, the door being shown in closed position with the locking means in locked position in the frame.

Referring now more specifically to the accompanying drawing in which I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 4 thereof, a letter I generally designates a door jamb or frame, and a letter D a door hingedly connected thereto as usual.
Conventional hinges H are used to hang the door and include leaves 10 and 11 provided with openings 12 to accommodate screws 13 which are employed to connect the door D to the jamb J, and it will be observed that the hinges are secured to the outer face 14 of the jamb or frame, and to the outer surface 15 of the door in the conventional manner. The leaves 10 and 11 are provided with interfitting knuckles 16 and 17, and a hinge pin 18 is employed to secure the leaves in hinged relation.
Projecting from the rear face of the leaf 11, adjacent the intermediate knuckle 17, is an L-shaped locking pin 19 which is welded or otherwise secured in position, the turned leg 20 of which is adapted to be received in a recess 21 provided in the side face of the door jamb J. The front wall of the recess 21 is cut at right angles to the side face of the jamb, while the opposite wall of said recess is flared as at 22 to provide clearance to permit the pin 19 to swing outwardly, out of the recess 21, when the door is opened. An L-shaped recess 23 is provided in the door D to accommodate the pin 19 and this can be formed in any desired manner. For example, a substantially square piece can be cut from the door to form a generally right angular notch and then a sufficient amount of material can be removed from two adjacent sides of the piece that when it is returned to the door and secured thereto in a suitable manner, such as by bonding, the L-shaped groove or recess 23 will be provided.
The first step in mounting the hinge, of course, is to insert the pin 19 in the recess 23 which is easily accomplished before the door is brought into hanging position by disposing the pin 19 in the right angular notch before the substantially square piece or section is returned to the notch. Thereafter, the section may be restored to the notch and secured in a manner to be embraced by the pin 19 in the recess 23, thereby serving as retaining means for the pin 19. Finally, the hinge can be secured to the jamb by means of screws 13. It will be apparent that when the door D is swung to closed position as in the drawing, the pin 19 will be locked in the recess 21, and if the lock (not shown) on the opposite edge is locked, the portion of the door shown cannot be 3 pulled or pried outwardly even if the screws 13 and hinge pin 18 are removed.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a similar embodiment of the invention in which the pin 19 is mounted on one face of the plate 24 which is secured to the rear surface 25 of the door D by screws 26. In this embodiment, the wall 22 of the recess in the jamb need not be flared as severely as in the previously described device, since the pin 19 is located at a greater distance from the hinge pin 18. A metal plate 27, provided with an opening 28 of a size corresponding to the size of the recess, may be mounted in a mortise 29 in the door jamb to register with the recess in the jamb. V
In Figs.5 and 6 I have shown the hinge H mounted in mortises 30 and 31 provided in the side wall of the door jamb and edge of the door respectively, and it will be apparent that the device of Figs. 3 and 5 will function no matter how the hinges are mounted.
It is to be understood that various equivalent elements may be adapted in place of the elements described, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: i
A hinge construction for a door member wherein the door is provided with a generally right angular notch having retaining means therein forming a generally L- shaped recess and wherein the door is mounted adjacent to a jamb member having a recess therein, said hinge construction comprising a first leaf for attachment to the jamb member; a second leaf for attachment to the door member; means pivotally connecting said leaves one to the other; a generally L-shaped part having one of its ends mounted on said second leaf for reception in said generally L-shaped recess, with its other end being of such length as to project beyond said door member towards said recess in said jamb member, the arrangement being such that when said leaves are attached to their respective members and said door member is in its closed position, said L-shaped part is received in said L-shaped recess and is retained therein by said retaining means and said other end of said L-shaped part is received in said recess in said jamb member.
