Abstract

A swinging door is equipped with a key operated, double deadlock-type cylinder lock, operable only by key from either door side. The door panel is provided on the hinged edge thereof with one or more fixed dowel members projecting substantially from that edge, which are coaxially received telescopically, when the door is closed, in detent socket means in a frame jamb abutted by the door edge. This prevents removal of the door from the frame by removal, at the interior of the door-closed space, of the door hinge pintles, or by removal or forcing of the hinge itself, since the panel is double dogged at its other edge.

[ ABSTRACT A swinging door is equipped with a key operated. double deadlock-type cylinder lock, operable only by key from either door side. The door panel is provided on the hinged edge thereof with one or more fixed dowel members projecting substantially from that edge, which are coaxially received telescopically, when the door is closed, in detent socket means in a frame jamb abutted by the door edge. This prevents removal of the door from the frame by removal, at the interior of the door-closed space, of the door hinge pintles, or by removal or forcing of the hinge itself, since the panel is double dogged at its other edge.

Field of the Invention The improved door construction finds wide application in the field of burglary prevention, more specifically, in foiling the theft of objects too large to be removed through a readily penetrated window or like opening, such as, for only a single example, a console television or record changer-radio set, hence requiring burglarous removal through a larger exit opening such as a door.
2. Description of the Prior Art A search has revealed only the patent to Skidmore, US. Pat. No. 167,576 of Sept. 7, 1875. This discloses the use of a stud projecting from the hinged edge of a door and receivable into a recess in the door jamb, the stud engaging against a cushion at the base of a recess to deaden noise occasioned by a sudden closing of the door. However, nothing is shown or suggested in regard to the application of means of this sort to a door equipped, as essentially contemplated by the invention, with double deadlocked cylinder and key lock means, thus preventing opening of the door by a burgler in the locked room, having gained entry through a breached window, for example.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An application of the improvement of the invention to a swinging-type door construction is primarily contemplated, although uses of the inventive principle in panels otherwise movable, and other than a door, are contemplated. Essentially, the invention envisions any type of installation in which an opening of a closure member or panel from the interior of a closed room or space, ordinarily but not necessarily in a commercial establishment, is in no way practically possible save, through the use of key or like means not available to an unauthorized individual.
Structurally speaking, the construction of the invention is very simple. It requires only the provision on an exposed face of a door frame jamb, or the like, of one or more restraining or detent sockets of substantial depth, which are preferably armored by metal sleeve insert means of a nature to further frustrate a forcible breaching of the door opening. For coaction with such detent socketing or recessing, the door panel carries, at an elevation or elevations corresponding to the socket means, one or more rigid locking pin, stud or dowel members, preferably threaded firmly for a substantial distance into the hinged edge of the door. Such dowel means projects a substantial distance from the door edge, and a substantial distance into the socket of the jamb when the door is closed, being then double deadlocked by the contemplated cylinder lock device; the latter may be of a conventional type, as hereinafter identified typically. Naturally, the dowel and socket provisions are located above or below hinge components of the door and jamb. The hinging is usually through the agency of pintles removably engaging hinge leaf eyes at the inner side of the door, but a removal of the pintles finds the double dogged door of the improved construction still effectively locked at its hinge edge, i.e., proof against opening by swinging about its dogged free edge as an axis, or by a physical forcing of the door at its hinged edge.

FIG. 4 is a further fragmentary view similar to FIG. 3, but showing the door panel as closed and secured by the dowelsocket and cylinder lock means of the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The illustrated embodiment of the invention involves a swinging door panel 10 pivotally connected conventionally, as by upper, intermediate and lower hinges ll, 12, 13, of the alternate leaf type, which are connected to the edge 14 of panel 10 and to a surface portion 15 of a conventional door frame jamb 16 facing and practically abutted by edge 14 when the door is closed. Conventionally, the leaves 17 of hinges l1, l2 and 13 are pivotally articulated by upright pintles l8 removable axially from aligned, alternating eyes 19 integral with hinge leaves 17.
As an essential concept of the lock combination of the improved door construction, the door 10 is equipped with a keyoperated cylinder lock, generally designated by the reference numeral 20, of the double deadlock type, whose bolt 21 (FIG. 4) projects into a keeper recess in a surface of the second upright jamb 22 of the door frame, this keeper being conventionally armored by means of a flanged metal sleeve 23.
Although equivalent locks of different manufacture are available and suited to the purpose of the invention, the lock 20 is contemplated to be typically one of two models manufactured by Schlage Lock Company of San Francisco, California and Vancouver, British Columbia, i.e., its model B262P or B462P. Both are designated as double cylinder deadlock items, unlocked at either the inner or outer side of the door only by use of a key. As illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, appropriate molding strips 25 may be fixedly applied to the door jambs l6 and 22 as stops and to mask the closed door edges at the outer side.
As a vital second aspect of the invention, one or more elongated locking pins or dowels 26, shown in the form of two wood screws or studs, are threaded a very substantial distance into the hinged door edge portion 14. The locations are indicated in FIG. 2 as being just below the upper hinge 11 and just above the lower hinge 13, although the exact positioning is optional. Dowels 26 may have kerf-type ends 27 to facilitate their application, and preferably extend a substantial distance from door edge 14, although the length factor will depend to some extent upon a clearance factor later mentioned.
The dowel ends 27 are received, when the door is closed and locked, in horizontally aligned locking or detent sockets 28 of substantial depth formed in the jamb surface portion or edge 15, these recessed sockets being preferably armored by elongated and flanged, tubular metal inserts or sleeves 29. The sleeves may be driven into the sockets with a tight fit and are further anchored in place by penetrating points 30 upset from the sleeve flange. If desired, the latter may be sunk into and flush with jamb surface portion 15.
It is highly desirable that the diameter of the bore 31 of the armoring insert sleeve be only a trifle greater than the diameter of dowel end 27, sufficient to enable the latter to clear without interference into the bore 31, and leaving a minimum radial space between the dowel and insert. This minimizes lateral slop or play should the hinge pintles 18 be removed in an attempt made to take door 10 out of place at the hinged jamb zone. It is for this reason also that the length of the dowel end 27 projecting from door edge should only be sufficiently great to afford a substantial overlap and interlock in insert bore 31, yet not of such length as to require an unduly large radial clearance for unhindered swing. Length and diameter differential factors of this sort should be kept in mind to the extent practically possible without rendering the installation of the dowel on the door, or the location of the socket on the jamb, an inordinately precise matter.
It is of course intended that in the case of a nonwood or other panel material not readily penetrable by wood screwtype dowel means suitable other means shall be utilized to attach the dowel or dowels to the panel.
The mode of application, the functioning and the advantages of the improved door and lock combination are be lieved to be obvious from the foregoing description. The dowel and socket arrangement adds but insignificantly to the cost of any door equipped with the contemplated double cylinder deadlock device 20; and its advantages in preventing theft of large-sized objects from a locked space outweigh many times, indeed, the added cost factor of thus double deadlocking the door.
What is claimed is:
l. A door or like closure set preventing forceful egress from a closed space defined in part by said set, comprising a swingable door or like panel member having hinge means adjacent an edge surface portion thereof, a fixed frame member to which said panel member is swingably articulated by said hinge means, said frame member having a surface portion faced by said portion of the panel member when the panel member is swung in closed relation to said frame member about a hinge axis at said hinge means, one of said portions having a socket and the other portion having an element projecting therefrom in position to telescope in said socket in said closed and facing relation of the panel and frame member surface portions, said panel and frame members each having a further surface portion opposite the first-namedportion thereof, which further portions also face one another in said closed relation of said members, and double-dogged latch means acting at said opposite portions to lock the panel member releasably in said relation, said latch means being operable from the enclosed space-side of the set for a release of the panel member and a nonforceful egress from said space only by a key or like element.
2. The set of claim 1, in which said element is a dowel fixedly carried by said panel member to project from said edge surface portion of the latter.
3. The set of claim 2, in which said socket and said dowel have radial space therebetween in said closed relation only sufficient to permit unhindered clearance of the dowel in swinging to that relation, said socket being internally armored by a sleeve element.
4. A door or like closure set preventing forceful egress from a closed space defined in part by said set, comprising a swingable door or like panel member having hinge means adjacent an edge surface portion thereof, a fixed frame member to which said panel member is swingably articulated by said hinge means, said frame member having a surface portion faced by said portion of the panel member when the panel member is swung in closed relation to said frame member about a hinge axis at said hinge means, an elongated socket recess of generally cylindrical configuration in said surface portion of said frame member, a rigid generally cylindrical elongated sleeve element inserted in said recess in tight fitting relationship therewith to prevent a forcible breaching of the panel and frame members when in said closed relation, the outer end of said sleeve element being provided with a laterally extending flange having thereon a plurality of penetrating elements which extend into said surface portion of said frame member to reinforceably secure said sleeve element in said recess, with said flange abutting the surface portion of the frame member, an elongated locking member engaged rigidly by said panel member and projecting from said edge surface portion of the latter to enter said recess, said recess and said locking member having space therebetween when the panel and frame members are in said closed relation, said space being of a size sufficient to permit unhindered clearance of said locking member relative to the recess when the panel member is swung to said closed relation, said panel and frame members each having a further surface portion opposite the first-named portion thereof, which further portions also face one another in said closed relation of said members, and double-dogged latch means carried by said panel member acting at said opposite surface portion of the frame member to lock the panel member releasably in said closed relation, said double-dogged latch means being operable from the enclosed space side of the set for a release of the panel member and a nonforceful egress from said space only by a key or like element.
5. The set of claim 4 wherein said elongated locking member is in the form of a dowel which is threaded on one end the panel member.

Claims (5)

1. A door or like closure set preventing forceful egress from a closed space defined in part by said set, comprising a swingable door or like panel member having hinge means adjacent an edge surface portion thereof, a fixed frame member to which said panel member is swingably articulated by said hinge means, said frame member having a surface portion faced by said portion of the panel member when the panel member is swung in closed relation to said frame member about a hinge axis at said hinge means, one of said portions having a socket and the other portion having an element projecting therefrom in position to telescope in said socket in said closed and facing relation of the panel and frame member surface portions, said panel and frame members each having a further surface portion opposite the first-named portion thereof, which further portions also face one another in said closed relation of said members, and double-dogged latch means acting at said opposite portions to lock the panel member releasably in said relation, said latch means being operable from the enclosed space-side of the set for a release of the panel member and a nonforceful egress from said space only by a key or like element.
2. The set of claim 1, in which said element is a dowel fixedly carried by said panel member to project from said edge surface portion of the latter.
3. The set of claim 2, in which said socket and said dowel have radial space therebetween in said closed relation only sufficient to permit unhindered clearance of the dowel in swinging to that relation, said socket being internally armored by a sleeve element.
4. A door or like closure set preventing forceful egress from a closed space defined in part by said set, comprising a swingable door or like panel member having hinge means adjacent an edge surface portion thereof, a fixed frame member to which said panel member is swingably articulated by said hinge means, said frame member having a surface portion faced by said portion of the panel member when the panel member is swung in closed relation to said frame member about a hinge axis at said hinge means, an elongated socket recess of generally cylindrical configuration in said surface portion of said frame member, a rigid generally cylindrical elongated sleeve element inserted in said recess in tight fitting relationship therewith to prevent a forcible breaching of the panel and frame members when in said closed relation, the outer end of said sleeve element being provided with a laterally extending flange having thereon a plurality of penetrating elements wHich extend into said surface portion of said frame member to reinforceably secure said sleeve element in said recess, with said flange abutting the surface portion of the frame member, an elongated locking member engaged rigidly by said panel member and projecting from said edge surface portion of the latter to enter said recess, said recess and said locking member having space therebetween when the panel and frame members are in said closed relation, said space being of a size sufficient to permit unhindered clearance of said locking member relative to the recess when the panel member is swung to said closed relation, said panel and frame members each having a further surface portion opposite the first-named portion thereof, which further portions also face one another in said closed relation of said members, and double-dogged latch means carried by said panel member acting at said opposite surface portion of the frame member to lock the panel member releasably in said closed relation, said double-dogged latch means being operable from the enclosed space side of the set for a release of the panel member and a nonforceful egress from said space only by a key or like element.
5. The set of claim 4 wherein said elongated locking member is in the form of a dowel which is threaded on one end and is provided with a slot on the other end to facilitate the insertion of the threaded end into said edge surface portion of the panel member.
