auxrnm'nr FASTENER FOR bean Application flled s eptember 39, 1925. Serial No. 59,6311 I This invention relates to auxiliary locking devices for doors; Doors, as ordinarily hung, are not securely locked for'thereason that even though a high grade lockbe employed at the free side of the door, the door can be opened by removing the .pintle pins of tlalei door hinges and then bodily displacing e door; Therefore, the present invention has, as its primary object to PIOVIdG means for preventing such displacement of the door in the event an attempt is made to open the same by removing the pintle pins ofthehinges. 1 Another object of the invention is to provide an auxiliary locking device for doors which may be readily .applied to'any door already hung without the necessity of takingdown the door andwhich device willsecurely hold the door at its hinged side against outward displacement from its frame, the ordinary 'lock serving its usual. function of preventing outward displace;

ment of the free side of the door.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose stated which will serve not only as an auxiliary locking means for the door but also as a means for preventing sagging or settling of the door in its frame.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one embodiment of the invention adapted to a door.

Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional View illustrating the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the door and its frame being likewise shown in section and the door being closed.

igure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, illustrating a somewhat simplified form of the invention.

Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the embodiment of the invention in a hinge.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and'2 of the drawings, the device is illustrated as comprising a locking member indicated in general by the numeral 1, and a keeper member indicated in general by the numeral 2. The locking member 1 comprises a rectangular plate 3 which is mortised in the edge of the door, which is indicated by the numeral 4, and secured in place by screws 5, the door being hung by the usual hinges 6 within the door frame 7 At its up er or lower end the 65 late 1 is provided with an integral locking ger 8 which is of arcuate form and, in the through 2 and projects .into a recess 10 formedjin the jambof the door frame upon whichthe closed. position of 5 the. door,

a slot 9'for'med in the keeper mem er is enga door is hung, asbest illustrated inFigure 2:

ofthe drawings. It will be observed by. reference to Figure 2, that the finger 8is fiat-sided and that its edge which is the more remotefroin the pintles of the hinges andv which'edge' is indicated by the numeral 11, is concentric to theaxes of the pintlesof the hinges. The other. arcuate edge Of thefinger, indicated by the numeral 12, is carved on an arc such-that the finger'will re'adilyem ter the slot 9 when the dooris swung to closed position, but on such. an are that when; the dooryis in full closed position, the, said. edge 12, at the inner end of the finger,will snugly engage against-the adjacent end wall of the slot. 9, thereby preventing any play or loo'seness. if thepintle pins ofthe: door.

hinges should be removedin anattempt to open the door. This is,of course, of importan ce inasmuch as if there. shouldbe anappreciable play between the parts, the one attempting to surreptitiously open the door would be influenced to use a tool of some kindto take advantage of the loose fit be tween the parts in an attempt to pry open the door. It will be observed by reference to Figure 1 of the drawings that the slot 9 is of a width substantially not greater than the thickness of the locking finger 8, so that when the door is closed, the finger will fit,

at its inner end, more or less sungly within the slot, thereby preventin an sa in of the door at its hinged sid add, tl idreiire, the device serves not only its initial function of locking the door in a manner to prevent opening thereof in the event the pint-1e pins of the hinges are withdrawn but, it serves also as a means to revent sagging of the door at its hinged si e.

It is preferable that the keeper shown in igures 1 and 2 of the drawings be employed for the reason that it adds to the security of the locking device, keeper may be omitted, as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, and the door jamb may be merely formed with a socket indicated by the numeral 13, to accommodate the locking finger which, in this figure, is indicated by the numeral 14 and corresponds in every respect to the finger 8 of the previously described form. In this, instance, the recess 13 will be so formed that the concave edge but, if desired, the i engages the keeper upon a manner to preclude outward displacement 15 of the locking finger corresponding to the edge 12 in the previously described form, will engage against one wall of the recess, in closed position of the door, so as to prevent any play between the parts.

In the previously described forms of the invention the'auxiliary locking device is independent of the hinges for the door, but in the embodiment illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings, one leaf of an ordinary hinge, indicated by the numeral 16, may be provided with a locking finger 17 integral with either the upper or the lower portion thereof and corresponding in every respect to the fingers 8 and 14: of the previously described forms. It will be obvious that arecess must be formed in the door frame adjacent the companion hinge leaf to receive the finger 17 From the foregoing description of the invention, it will be evident that a door equipped with the auxiliary locking device cannot be opened even if the pintle pins of the hinges for the door are withdrawn, inasmuch as the locking finger of the device the door jamb in of the hinged side of the door from its frame, theiordinary lock upon the door preventing similar displacement of the free side of the door from the frame. Ordinarily, the provision of a single one of these devices located about midway of the height of a door will sufiice, but, if desired, two or more of the devices may be employed upon the door and they may be arranged in any manner found most convenient.

Having thus described the invention, What I claim is:

1. An auxiliary fastening hinged door comprising an attaching late to be secured to the hinged edge 0 the door, and a locking finger projecting from the plate and, in the closed position of the door, engaging in a recess formed in the door frame, the said finger being of arcuate form and tapered towards its free end and having one edge-concentric to the axes of the hingesfor the door whereby the prong will have wedging ,fit in the recess when the door is closed. 1

2. A fastener for a hinged door comprising a keeper plate adapted to be secured to the jamb of a door frame and in covering relation to a recess in the jamb and having a slot communicating with the recess, an attaching plate adapted to be secured to the hinged edge of the door, and a locking finger projecting from the said attaching plate and tapered towards its free end and when the door is closed having its inner end portion snugly fitting in the slot in the keeper plate and substantially filling said slot, said finger being of arcuate form and having one edge concentric to the axes of the hinges for the door.

In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
