Description

Patented Cet. 23, 1928.

EUGENE R. KISSINGER AND ROY H. KIKSSINGER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE STRIKER PLATE son nooiis.
Application led March 23, 1927. Serial No. 177,706.
This invention relates to improvements in latch plates for use in connection with adjustable striker'plate for doors and more particularly the swinging doors of automobile bodies, and t-he primary object of the invention resides in the provision of an adjustable plate through the medium of which compensation may be made for wear on the locking surface of both the plate and the door, in order that such doors may be maintained in a tight properly locked condition and to avoid the presence of rattles and looseness which inevitably occurs in ordinary constructions lof this kind after the doors have been in use for some time.y
For a further understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure lis a horizontal sectional view takenthrough the cooperating parts of an automobile door and door janib, showing more particularly the construction of the improved adjustable striker plate comprising the present invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the door jainb showing the plate in its operative position therein.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the base portion of the plate, and
Figure i is a perspective View 0f the separable portion thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a door frame or jamb of the type commonly found in automobile body constructions, and the numeral 2 designates the usual form of swinging door, and although the hinge mounting for the door has not been shown, it will be understood that the latter is of standard construction and operation. The door as usual is provided with a latch mechanism consisting of the usual spring pressed bolt 3, the beveled nose portion l of which being adapted to extend beyond the confines of the door and yet to be resiliently retractible from such extended position.
The improved striker plate, comprising the present invention consists of two sections, a main or base section 5 and a removable or adjust-able separable section 6. The base section 5 is formed from a single casting or the like and is of substantially wedge shaped forin, having the thinner edge 7 thereof located toward the front of the door jainb and the thicker or inner edge portion 8 so arranged as to present a locking face 9, which is adapted to be engaged by the back of the-bolt 3,
` as shown in Figure 1, so as to hold the door in locked relationship with respect to the jamb.
The forward portion of the base section 5 has the beveled surface thereof provided with teeth or vertical serrations 10, which are adapted to engage withsiinilar teeth or serrations 11 provided on the removable section 6, the teeth 10 and 11 providing for close locking engagement between the sections 5 and G. The removable section is formed with an opening 12, which is adapted to register with a longitudinally extending slot 13 formed in the main section and extending` from the front edge 7 thereof longitudinally toward the rear or inner edge portion of said main section. A
screw or the like 14 has its headed end seatedv within' the countersunk opening 12, while the ward portion of the slot 13 and is threaded into the wooden post constituting a part of the door frame 1. Also, a second screw 15 has y its headed en'd received within the countersunk portion of the slot 13, and the shank of the screw 15 is likewise threaded into the door frame 1. The removable section 6 is of wedge shaped form so that its inner edge will produce a locking surface 16, adapted to provide a safety locking shoulder so that if the bolt 3 is accidentally disengaged with the surface 9, the swinging of the door in an out` ward direction would be arrested by the engagement of the bolt 3 with the surface 16.
It has been found. that after a certain period of use considerable wear takes place between the normally engaging surface of the bolt 3 and the main section 5. This wear results in rattle and looseness on the part of the door and is a source of considerable annoyance in vehicle operation. Ordinarily to overcome the same it has been necessary in the past to substitute new striker plates involving' considerable expense and labor. However, by the present invention this may be avoided by simply loosening the screws 14 and 15, and moving the base plate of the striker toward the bolt 3, as indicated by the arrow in Figure 1, in order that proper registration may be effected between the bolt and the face 9 to overcome the developed looseness and rattle. This result could not be permanently achieved by merely providing the base sec-- tion 6 with a slot, since the adjustment could not be maintained for any length of time, but
`shank of the screw passes-through the forby providing tlie separable locking-section Wliichitivill be observed is not providedvvith a Slot, but with an opening, the perinanency of tlie adjustment can be maintained indefinitely or untilI additionalA -Wearsets in.
The construction lias the advantaoe of beine' Y readily and cheaply manufactured and provides a distinct improvement and reiineinent in automobile door lock construction.
Vihat is claiined is:
