FASTENING DEVICE FOR SWINGING WINDOWS AND DOORS.
Application filed Auvgustl, 1921. Serial No. 497,187.
Be it known that I, ARNT B. lnDnnsnN, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and tltate or' Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fastening Devices tor Swinging `Windows and Doors; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description ot' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to maire and use the same.
invention relates to lfastening devices tor swinging windows and doors and it consists ot the novel devices and combination ot devices hereinafter described and dei'ined in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention in its preferred torni, as applied to a swinging cellar window. ln said drawings, wherein like notations refer to like parts throughout the several vie-ws,
Fig. l is a vertical sectional view through 'i part ot the cellar wall and the window trame and window with the i'ull lines showing the window in its closed, and the dotted lines showing the window in its open positions;
F ig. 2 is a detail in side elevation showing one of the fixed retainers detached.
Fig. 3 is a detail showing another ot the said fixed retainers detached, in elevation;
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation ot the resilient latch detached;
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the latch, as shown in Fig. 4l.
'l'he numeral l indicates an ordinary cellar wall in which a window trame 2 is seated. A swinging window 3 is pivoted to the top of said window frame. fl indicates an ordinary floor supporting joist above said window. A retainer 5 preferably resilient having an upturned lock shoulder 6 is secured to the bottom ot said window frame 2, below and adjacent to the free edge of said window. Another retainer 7, preferably resilient, of curved form, is fastened to said joist et above, suitably located to hold the window in its open position. The numeral 8 denotes as an entirety a resilient S-shaped latch, preferably of spring metal, secured to the free edge of said window in the same plane with the retainers 5 and S. This resilient S-shaped latch 8 affords an inclined camming portion 9, a depending loch bend i0, a curved upper camming portion ll and a lifting handle 12 at its outer entremity; The depending bend l0 is adapted to be cammed by the inclined portion 9 into engagement with the retainer 5 behindy the shoulder 6, when the window is closed. As shown in the drawings, the force ot gravity will be suiicient to cam the lock bend l0 into engagement with the retainer 5 when the window is dropped from open position. l/Vhen the window is swung to open position', the upper cammin'g surface l1 o the latch 8 engages the retainer 7, which is of reciprocal shape to the former, and holds the window in an open position. Due to the depending incline ofthe lock bend l() ot the latch 8, in engagement with the lool; shoulder 6 of retainer 5, the window 3 will be positively locked from outside entrance. Outside ypressure against the same will simply force the lock bend downward more tightly against the shoulder 6.
Although shown in a vertical swinging door or wlndow, itis evident that my device may be equally well used in horizontally swinging doors or windows. It will also be understood that my fastening devices may be varied in form without departing from the principle of my invention.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
l. The combination with a swinging door or window and the frame thereof, or' a pair of retainers, one of which is adapted to be secured to the upper surface or" the bottom member of said frame to project therefrom and having a locking means thereon, the other retainer being adapted to be attached to the side of a window adjacent the bottom edge thereof and having an outwardly and downwardly projecting portion adapted to be be engaged and locked by said locking means and having an upwardly and outwardly curved portion forming a tingen hold 0r releasing said locking means and retainer and also constituting a resilient latch for engaging a stationary retainer to hold the door or window in open position.
2. A locking device tor holding a window in closed position and also holding the same in open position comprising, a retainer attached to the window casing having an upstanding tang a station ary member disposed adjacent the edgev ott the window when swung to open position, and a latching means rigidly secured in position entirely on one side of the window comprising a pointed angle portion adapted to engage lll) lll)
said tang, and also comprising a curved portion forming a ingerholdfor releasing said point and also constituting a latching means for engaging said stationary member when the window is swung to open position said angle portion and curved portion being of resilient material.
3. rlihe combination with a swinging door or window and the frame thereof, of a pair of retainers, one of which is secured to the upper surface of the bottom member of said frame and projects therefrom, and Whichis provided with an upstanding lip forming a locking means, the other retainer being attached to the side of the window or dooi` adjacent the bottom edge thereof having a downwardly and outwardly resilient projecting V-shaped portion bent upwardly to form a projecting point adapted to pass over and engage said lip when the door or window is closed.
4. rlhe structure set forth in claim 3, the outer side of said downwardly and outwardly projecting member being again bent outwardly in a curve to form Va hand hold by means of which the said point can be lifted and released from said lip, said hand hold being also constructed and arranged t0 engage a member to hold the window or door in open position and a fixed member having a curved recess therein with which said handheld engages to hold the window in open position.
5. rlhe'combination with a swinging door or window and the frame thereof, of a pair of retainers formed from flat strip metal, one of which is adapted to be secured to the upper surface of the bottom member of'said vframe to project therefrom andnhaving an upwardlyy projecting locking means thereon, the other retainer-being adapted to be' attached to the side of a window adjacent the bottom edgethereof and having an outwardly and downwardly projecting angle portion the apex of which is adapted to be engaged and locked by said locking` means, said portion being bent upwardly in curved form to form a hand hold, and a Vretaining member formed of strip metal fixed in position and having a socket portion adapted to be engaged by the said hand hold when the window or door is swung open to hold said window or door in openl position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
ARNT B. PEDERSEN.
