This invention relates to improvements in window sash adjustors and locks.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved window sash adjustor and lock construction which will be adjustably supported upon a sash frame to automatically hold the sash in the desired adjusted opened position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved window" sash adjusting and looking device which will be adjustably supported upon a window sash for holding the window in any desired adjusted open position, and for an tomatically locking the window sash when it is disposed in its closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved window sash adjusting and locking device which will be entirely automatic in operation, the same being highly efiicient and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame with window sashes disposed therein, showing the improved window adjusting and locking device supported in position on the lower sash frame;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of a window frame being partly broken away and in section with upper and lower window sashes disposed therein, the lower sash shown partly raised and supporting the adjusting and locking device thereon;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view partly in section of a portion of a window frame and window sash showing the adjusting and locking device in locked position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail front view of a portion of a window frame and window sash showing the adjusting and locking device in position for holding the window sash in raised or open position;
Figure 5 is a, front elevation of the improved window adjusting and locking member;
Figure 6 is an edge view of the improved window adjusting and locking member;
Figure '7 is a sectional view taken on the line 'l--'I of Figure 5, and
Figure 8 is a view taken on the line 8-8 of Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved form of window sash adjusting and locking device. For purposes of illustration, there is shown a window frame generally designated by the reference numeral I, and an upper sash frame 2 and lower sash frame 3 vertically slidable therein, being suitably glazed at i and 5 respectively.
A locking notch or seat 6 is cut into the side wall of the window frame I in its inner surface adjacent its lower end, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. The upper portion I of said notch or seat 6 forms an angled locking shoulder against which the upper end of a locking member hereinafter described will engage, while the outwardly and downwardly extending side 3 of the notch or seat 6 will be engaged by the upper side of said locking member when the lower window sash or frame 3 is in fully closed position.
The improved adjusting and locking member comprises a substantially rectangular shaped flat plate 9 which will be formed with an upstanding top flange Ill, an upstanding bottom flange I I, and a connecting upstanding side flange I2. Vertically extending contact cams or bearing lips l3 and I4 are integrally formed at the juncture points of the top and bottom flanges I8 and II with the opposite ends of the side flange I2, serving to engage the inside edge or surface of the window frame I when the locking member and lower window sash frame 3 is in raised or open position.
The body of the adjusting and locking member 20 is provided with the spaced parallel inwardly and downwardly extending slots or guideways I 5 and I 6, said slot or guideway I5 being also formed with a, spur or extension slot I'I adjacent its upper end extending inwardly through the member 9, and is formed with an annular or arcuate seat portion l8 at its innermost end.
Positioning screws or lugs I9 and 2| will be placed through said slots or apertures when the lower window sash frame is in closed position with the adjusting and locking member or plate 9 seated in the locking notch or seat 6, to be re ceived respectively in the annular seat portion I8 of the spur slot I! and in the upper end of the slot l5, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings.
The screws I9 and 2| will be screwed into the lower sash frame 3 far enough to firmly support the adjusting and locking plate or member 9, but will allow for sufiicient play or movement of said member 9, as the same moves up and down with the lower sash frame 3 to frictionally engage the inner surface of the window frame I, thereby frictionally clamping against the window frame with the contact or bearing lips i3 and M to effectively and efficiently hold the lower window sash frame inthe desired. adjusted open position.
The mode of operation of the improved sash adjustor and lock will be more fully explained as follows: When the lower window sash 3 is in its fully closed position, the locking member or plate 9 will be moved laterally until it is received in the locking notch or seat 6 formed inthe adjacent side wall of the window frame I, as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, thereby positively preventing anyone on the outside of, the window sash from releasing the locking member so thatthe window sash. may be. raised.
When it is desired to raise the window, the looking plateor member 9 will be movedv laterally toward. the right-as seen in. Figure 3' of the. drawings, causing the plate to assume avertical position, asshown in Figure 4 of. the drawings. The window may thenbe raised to. the. desired. height, and due to. the inclination. of the parallel extend.- ingw slots !5' and I6 cooperating with-the securing screws l9 and 2|, movement. of the window in a downward direction will cause a lateral. movemerit of the locking plate or member Stoward the leftwor toward the adjacent. inside surface of the window frame I, thus causing the. shoulders. l3 and M at. the ends. of said plate or member 9 to frictionally engage the adjacent inner surface of said window frame to frictionally hold the sash in the desired. adjusted open position. Obviously, the amount of friction between the locking plate ormember 8 and the adjacent inner surface of the window frame may be readily overcome when it is desired to. lower the window or sash frame, by merely pulling down on the. sash.
' From the foregoing description,v it will be apparent. that. there has been devised andprovided a highly eflicient formof sash adjustor and lock for window constructions.
While the preferred embodiment. of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStatesis 1. Means for, retainingha sashframe inadjusted open positions in a window frame; comprising a pair of upper and lower vertically spaced and aligned outwardly extending lugs on the sash frame-adjacent the Window frame, a locking plate adjustably disposed on the sash frame and having a pair of upper and lower parallel angularly disposedguidewaysslidably supported on the lugs, outwardly extending flanges on the top and bottom of'the plate, a locking flange on one side of the plate connected with said first mentioned flanges; a pair of cams extending outwardly in diverging directions at theconnectingpoints between the flanges and adapted to frictionally bear against the window frame to prevent down- Ward'travel of" the sash frame;
2. The combination of claim 1-, wherein said window frame is provided with an inwardlyextending angular downwardly facing seat and means is provided" for' positioning said locking plate in the seat preventing upward movement of the sash frame, said means including a lateral extension, slot disposed} on the upper guid'eway in the opposite directionfrom the locking flange, said extension slot terminating inan arcuate seat to lockingly engage theupper lug.
