Description
March 2, 1954 w. e. B'ANHAM LOCK Filed Feb. 29, 1952 Inventor WI LLIAM. GEORGE BANKAM Attorney Patented Mar. 2, 1954 LOCK William George Banham, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Application February 29, 1952, Serial No. 274,204
3 Claims.
My present invention relates to improvements in a lock and especially to one in which the latch has two locking positions for selectively engaging either of two relatively movable spaced elements.
An object of the invention is to provide a twoway lock designed to selectively hold either one element against lateral movement or another element against vertical movement relative to the lock carrier.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mortise lock selectively engageable with either of two spaced elements to hold the one and free the other, such spaced elements when free being movable in planes at right angles to each other.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mortise lock insertable fiush in the edge of a carrier element and. having a latch movable into either of two sockets alignable respectively on opposite sides thereof to prevent either the transverse movement of One of said socket or any but limited vertical movement in one direction of the other socket.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock having a latch engageable with either of two sockets, such latch being self-locking against displacement in one of said sockets on the relative movement of the latch and socket in one direction and being ejected from the socket on the relative movement of the parts in the reverse direction, on which ejection the latch may be caused to seat in the other socket.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a novel, eflicient and highly useful lock of the nature specified that is characterized by structural simplicity, its ease of installation, dependable operation and low cost of production whereby the same is rendered commercially desirable.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described when reference is had to the drawings forming a part of this disclosure wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lock with the two spaced selectivcly-engageable sockets both aligned therewith;
Figure 2 is an elevation thereof with the latch 2 engaged in the relatively vertically movable socket;
Figure 3 is a correspondin side elevational view, with parts shows in section; and
Figure 4 is an elevation of a portion of a hinging double hung sliding window, showing a possible installation of this look.
While useable in any assembly where parts are to have relative sliding and swinging movements, I have shown this instant lock applied to a hinging double hung sliding window in Figure 4, only for the purpose of illustration and the orienting of the three principal and individually separable parts thereof. In this window structure the sash A has a double stile or side rail B at each side slidable in the usual guide channels C of the frame D. The sash part of the stile is connected to the outer stile post by a pivot E near the bottom to allow the sash to be hinged inwards but is held in normal position by the lock F set in the top of the stile.
When it is desired to swing the window in, the stile lock is released from the sash A and moved to engage a socket G in the frame D to prevent the upward slidin of the stile post, thereby caus ing the sash to be supported horizontally on the sill, as for cleaning. Thus it will b seen that the latch part of the lock is mounted in the top of the stile post and is selectably caused to engage spaced and alignable sockets in either the laterally swinging sash A or the relatively vertically movable frame D to free the one and hold the other. In the instant lock the latch consists of a relatively thin flat plate I of irregular shape rounded at the end 2 and having its underside 3 provided with a step 4 thence tapering to meet the straight or flat top 5 at a point 6, the top 5 joining the rounded end 2 by an angularly disposed end I. The latch l is mounted in an open ended U-shaped pocket 8, the vertically disposed arms 9 of which have an exterior flange It! at the top, and transversely through which pocket a terminally threaded pivot pin l l extends, being accommodated by a bore l2 in the latch I concentric with the rounded end 2.
A pair of sockets each individually alignable with and movable relative to the latch I lie one on each side of the pocket 8. These sockets are adapted to be mounted on carrier elements m'ovable in planes at right angles to one another, e. g., the one to move laterally across the end'of the latch pocket and the other to slide vertically horizontal level as the pocket 3, the first socket is a channel-like member 14 alignable longitudinally with the pocket 8 as seen in Figures 1, 2 and 3, being of substantially the same width as the pocket and having similar exterior top flanges l5, however the bottom l6 of the channel is inclined to serve as a rest for the latch i when nested therein and to support the latchs top edge 5 horizontal and preferably flush with the top flanged edges l5 and H] of the channel and pocket respectively. In such nested position it is desirable that the latch be so proportioned that its.
pointed free end 6 project slightly beyond the channel socket I l to afford a thumb grip whereby said latch may be raised clear of said channel socket.
The second socket in vertically slidable relation to the latch is a vertically elongated mortisetllpe housing l'i, the latch-confronting face l8 thereof suitably perforated as at IQ for attaching screws, having a long thin slot 23 therein. At its upper end this; slot 29 endsshort of the top of the housing if by a distance greater than the length of the latch from the shoulder to it pointed end '6 so that the latch I when swung into said socket housing I? through the admitting slot is held against dislodgement bythe endfi being trapped therein by the front plate overhanging lip 2+ at the top of the slot that rests on the latch shoulder t that serves as a stop barring further vertical movement between thelatch and socket-housing in one direction. On the reverse relative movement of these. parts, however, the face plate 1-3 at the lower end or"- the slot 20- engag-es the inclined end I of the latch l and rotates it in an ejecting movement to throw it back into the channel socket It.
Applied to the window structure shown in Fig-- ure 4 and hereinbeiore described, the latch pocket 8' is recessed in the top of the outer partof the stile B, the channel socket h1- similarl y recessed in the top of the inner rail part of the sash A at" the edge thereof and the mortise housing H set into the bottom of the guide channel C' of the frame D at the normal level of the top of the sash. Thus, for the usual sliding of the sash innormal use, the latch l lies horizontally extended irrthe channel It securing the-sash against-hing ing inwards on the stile connecting pivots E but:
when it is desired to swing the sash A inwards as for washing the outside of the window, the latch l is raised clear of the channel id and ro--- tate'd into the mortise housing (7 allowing only a very limited vertical lift to the outer stile post until the shoulder stop t of the latch strikes the.
Thus it will be seen that a new and highly useful two-way lock is provided wherein a rotatable flat plate latch is individually engageable-witlieither of two spaced members movable in directions at right angles to one another to lock them against relative lateral and vertical movements respectively, and while it has been shown and described as applicable to a specific window structure, it will be manifest that such a lock is capable of widely varying uses. and many different embodiments within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, and it will consequently be apparent that all matters contained in the foregoing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not ina limitative or restrictive sense.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A lock comprising a U-shaped pocket open at the, top and both ends, a latch swingingly mounted in said pocket, on a transverse pivot, a channel member open at the top and ends and movable-laterally with respect to said latch and alignable therewith to receive the same and a vertically elongated socket member onthe oppesite' side of said latch from said channel memher and slidable in relation to said latch in which said latch may engage when freed from said channel; said latch being a relatively thin flat plate having a short angularly extending" end running upwards from near said pivot, a straightflat normally horizontal top and a sloping under side having a step'therein and therebeyond taperingto meet said fiat top a-ta point, whereby when said pocket and saidchannel member are aligned and said latch is seated in the latter, the straight fiat top of said latch lies flush with. the tops of said pocketand channel member.
2 A look. as set forth in claim I wherein the length of the latch plate from said pivot to its pointed end, relative to the length of said pocket: and said channel. member, is such that the pointed. free end of said latch plate projects beyond the remote end of the: channel member, providing a. thumb lift to disengage said latch from said: chair-- nelmember.
It. A look as set forth in claim 1 wherein said socket member isa mortise-type housing with a slot inthe latch-confronting face thereof through which saidlatch plate may enter, the sliding-of said socket member in one direction bringing the-top of the slot against the stepplate; said latch platewhen standing vertically insaid socket member resting: with its flat top against the inside of said housing and when ejectedtherefrom falling intosaid' channel mem--' her to lie horizontally with its fiat top flush with:
i the top of said channel member.
