UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES XVALSH, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,051, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed June 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES WALSH, of North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combined Sash Lock and Lift,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved handle for raising and lowering sashes, which handle is combined with a sash-lock held in the bottom of the sash.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved sash-lift. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line as m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the sash-lift and of the lock; Fig. 4., a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line yy, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view on the line 2 z, Fig. 3.
A box or frame, A, provided with a horizontal groove, A, is countersunk in the front surface of the bottom rail, B, of the sash.
The box A is provided with a front plate, B, having a vertical slot, 1), at each end, through which slots the prongs or side pieces, 0, of a handle, D, project, which prongs terminate at the inner ends in disks 0, through the centers of which the inner ends of rods E pass, which extend to the side edges of the sash, the inner ends of the rods passing through the ends of the box A.
On the inner ends of the rods E hubs F are secured, which project from heads G, held within the box A. The prongs or side pieces of the handle are thus mounted to turn or swing on the hubs F.
The heads G are provided on the inner ends with bosses or projections H, which project into the ends of a spiral spring, J, held in the box A and between the heads.
Each head G is provided in its outer edge with a V-shaped recess, K, and on the adjacent surface of each disk 0 or side piece, 0, a V-shaped cam, L, is formed, which fits into the corresponding V-shaped recess K in the heads G. The cams L and recesses K are so arranged that when the handle-prongs or side pieces, 0, project horizontally from the bottom rail of the sash the cams will be within the recesses.
On the outer end of each rod E a sleeve, M, is secured, in the outer end of which a rubber head, N, is held.
The sleeve M slides in a thimble, 0, held in the stile or in the end of the bottom rail of the sash.
The top and bottom of the box Aare beveled inward and toward the groove A, as shown.
The operation is as follows: Ordinarily the handle projects horizontally from the front of the bottom rail, B, and if the sash is to be raised the handle is swung up against the top bevel of the box A and the sash pushed up by means of the handle. By the above-described movement of the handle the disks 0 are turned about forty-five degrees, and cause the cams L to act on the inclined edges of the recesses K, thereby pressing the heads toward each other and compressing the spring J and moving toward each other the rods E and their rubber heads N, so as not to interfere with the free movement of the sash. As soon as the handle is released the spring J forces the heads G from each other, thereby turning the disks 0' and swinging the handle back into a horizontal position. At the same time the rods E are pushed in the direction toward the sides of the sash and press the rubber heads N firmly against the jamb P, thus locking the sash in place.
If the handle D is swung down for pulling down or lowering the sash, the heads G are also pressed inward and the sash released in the manner described.
At all times the sash is automatically released when the handle is swung up or down, and the sash is locked in place automatically when the handle is released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a vertically-swinging sash lift or handle provided with cams,of sash-locking rods extending from the handle to the side edges of the sash, and of heads secured on the rods and adapted to be acted 011 by the cams, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the swinging handle D 0, provided with cams L,of the rods E, 5 extending from the handle to the side edges of the sash, heads G, secured on the inner ends of the rods E and provided with recesses K, and of the spring J between the heads G, substantially as herein sh own and described.
3. The combination, with the swinging handle D O, of the rods E, the heads G, having hubs F and recesses K, the cams L on the side pieces of the handle, and the spring J between the heads G, substantially as herein shown 15 and described.
4. The combination, witha sash, of the box or frame A, having a beveled top and bottom, the handle 0 D, hung in the box or frame, and sash-locking rods adapted to be acted on by the handle and extending to the side edges of 20 the sash, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with the sliding rods E of a saslrfastener, sleeves M thereon, and the elastic heads N in said sleeves, of the 25 thinibles 0, having flaring mouths to receive the said heads to allow them to lie flush with the edge of the sash, substantially as set forth.
