WINDOW' LOCK.
Y Application filed August 22, 1922'. seiai no. 583,517.
This invention -relates tosash locks for 'winflowsi and theobject ofthe invention is to irovide an automatic sash fastener of siinple constructionwhich will not only lool; the sashes in closed position, but Willlocl vthe sashes ofl opened windows against further opening frein the outside. v
yThese object and other advantageous nds which will 'be described hereinafter, l I ttain in the following manner, reference beng had to the accompanying drawings in nigiure 9 is plan view of a blank from i a bracket forming a part of the dep 's made. in the drawings, 9 designates a window which an upper sash 10 and a lower are slidable. The window loclr ini a fiat nietallic plate 12 having aper- 3 near its ends for securing it to the r face of one side and above tlie bottoni rail oi" the upper sash. llate 12 has a series of spaced stops 14E pressed therefrom to provide ratchet teeth having their engaging faces at the bottoni.
A de'tent device co-operates with plate 12 and consists of a detent 15 pivoted, near one end in a ti-shaped bracket 16 secured tothe top rail of the lower sash. The ends 17 and 1S, of the detent are beveled in opposite directions. j Find 17 is adapted to engage with the ratchet teeth and lock the upper sash against downward niovenient relatively to the lower sash and the lower sash against upward movement relatively to the upper sash. End 18 is beveled suiiiciently to allow tliei'detent to'be swung out of engaging position. Detenty 15 ,is preferably provided .s ith an aperturel) in such position'tliat,
when the det-ent is in locking position, it will be partly covered bythe ears of bracket 16 and, when` the detent `isswung out of engagine` position, it willbe uncovered. The detentv may then be held iii idle position by inserting' a pin 20 in aperture 19. i Y
Bracket 16 niay be inade lfroin sheet inetal by stan'iping out an oblong plate Vwith apertures 21 near its ends two U-shaped cuts forming tongues extending from either side of a central cross barlQS andY apertures 24 in the tongues, then bending the tongues up toiforiii the ears of the bracket. A
'ililhvtlie wii'idowclosed and the detent in engagin position, as shown in Figure 2 of the diamine'. the detent will be in engage-- nient with the lower ratchet tooth and will hold both sashes against opening movement, lilithdrawing the detent perinits either sash to be opened to any desired extent and by allowing the detent to engage a ratchet tooth the sashes will then be held. againstrelative opening nioveinent. lf, for exaniple, the upper sash is lowered four inches it cannot be further lowered but the lower sash niay be raised thereby forcing` the upper sash up'- ward thereby closing the four inch opening at the top and lef/.Wing four inch openingl at the bottoni. Liirewise, if the upper sash be lowered two inches aiit the lower sash raised two inches. both sashes inay be raised thereby closing` the top opening and leaving four inch opening at ine bottoiin or both sashcs niay be lowered thereby closing the opening' at the bottoni, but. always maintaining die four inch limit and precluding entry of an intruder.
llhen the detent is in ing esi-e' an open sash niay be closed, the detent rid f over the inclined faces of the ratchet teem and falling by gravity into lool-:i g' TWhile l have describel iny invention talri a particular fornn it will be understood 'that the various parts of iny iiivei'it-ioii inav be changed without departing from the spirit thereof7 and hence I do not liiiiit inyself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that l ain at liberty to nialre such changes and alterations as fairly conie within thescope of the appended claims.
Having thus described iny invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A ivindotv sash fastener' consisting of a ratchetl plate adapted to be secured to the upper sash and having a central row of teeth cut and pressed outward therefrom; a bracket adapted to be secured to the top of the loue sash; said bracket having epaced ears; a detentplate pivotall7 mounted in the bra het and having a bevelled end adapted to engage beneath the teeth of said ratchet plate, said detent having an aperture partiallyv concealed when in operative position and exposed When in inoperative position; and a pin closely fittingin and reniovably projected through said aperture when in exposed position for holding the detent in its inoperative position.
A Windev( sash fastener consisting of a ratchet plate adapted to be secured to the upper sash; a bracket adapted to be secured to the top of the lower sash, said racket consisting' of a plate having tongues. cut and bent up therefrom to form spaced ears; a detent bar with a bevelled end pivotallv mounted between said ears and adapted with its other end to engage said ratchet plate, said detent having` an aperture that is exposed When in inoperative position and partly concealed when in its operative po sition; and a pin closely titting and removably projected through ssaid aperture when in its exposed position and bearincr on said ears for holding the detent in inoperative position.
3. A ivindonv sash fastener consisting' of a ratchet plate adapted to be secured to the upper sash and having a central iov-f et teeth cut and pressed outward theretroia: a bracket adapted to be secured to the top of the loiver sash, said bracket consist ing ot a plate havin'a)` tongues eut and tent up therefrom to form spaced ears: a that detent plate with bevelled ends pivotallv mounted between said ears and adapted to engage beneath the teeth of said ratchet plate, said detent having small aperture: and a pin closelyv but removabhY fitting' in and projecting through said aperture when in :i fully exposed position and bearing` on said ears for holding` the detent in its inoperative position.
ln testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification.
