Description

UNITED STATES PATENT' CHARLES E. STELLER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN; Y
sAsH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,209, dated November 8, 1881.
i Application filed October25,1880. (Model.)
`Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference markedth ereon, which forni a part of this speciiication.
Myinvention relates toirnprovementsin that class of sashffasteners the locking and supporting arm of which is counterpoised by the lifting-arm; and it consists more especially in the stop or lug which is formed in one andthe same piece with the lift, serving the threefold functions of a lift conforming to the shape of the hand of the operator, a counterpoise for retaining the supporting-arm against the casing, and a stop to arrest the upward movement, when raising the sash thereby, at the proper point t serveras a lift. My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents a perspective view of the same.
A represents the windowsash. B is the window-casing. C C are supporting-brackets. D is a bracket for locking the window down when in a closed position.
lE is the windowfastener proper, consisting in two levers arranged at right angles to each other, the general outline of which is similar to the bell-crank lever. 'It is loosely pivoted at or near its center by bolt or screw F to the sash A. i
The lower arm, G, of the fastener is so counterpoised by thearm H thatitisretain ed against the casing B.
The lower end of` arm G is provided with hook I, which is adapted to engage beneath the catch or bracket D, wherehythc window y is locked when closed.
The lower surface or extreme end of arm G- is convex in shape, and is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of brackets C (l when supporting the sash when raised.
The upper surface of brackets CE() is formed at an angle to the casing, which permits the fastener to be easily adjusted upon them and removed therefrom.
The lower surfaces of thebrackets C C are slightly convex in shape, so formed to permit the hook I to slide easily over them as the window is raised without the attention of the opcrater, and the supporting-arm G is so counterpoised by the upper arm that it is thrown back into the locking or supporting position against the casing instantaneously upon escaping contact with the supporting-brackets, and will, upon the sash being lowered, engage upon the tirst bracket below it, or beneath the catch D if closed, without the attention of the operator.
rJhe upper arm, H, of the fastener is provided with a lug or flange, J, which extends backward from the front surface of the sash A in such a manner that when raised it is brought in contact with the edge of the sash and checks the upward movement of the upper arm when at right angles to the sash, Vin
which position said upper arm serves as a lift for raising the sash. The hook I is thrown out of contact with the casing so far that it escapes contact with the brackets C and D, and the arm H is brought to rest in the most convenient position to serve as a lift.
The upper surface of the lifting-arm H is nicely shaped to conform to the shape of the thumb and forefmger of the operator, which is applied in the position indicated by the dotted lines representing a persons hand.
The fastener represented by dotted lines shows the position for supporting the window when open, while the lowergure thereof represents the position of the parts when the window is closed and locked.
The lifting-arm H extends back. from the front surface of the sash out of contact with screens 0r window-blinds, while the front surface of the two arms is formed in the same plane. y
I do not claim the bell-crank lever E, coulsisting in the combination of arms Gr and H, or the catch and lift with which said arms are respectively provided, as Iam aware they are not new. i
IOO
AWhat I Aeluinn as new, and desire to secure angles to the stile in the proper position to 1o by Letters Patent, isserve as a lift, substantially as and for the pur- In sash-fasteners, the combination, with the pose specied. lifting-arm H, of lug J, as formed upon the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 5 rear edge of the arm and adapted. to extend presence of two witnesses.
back from the face of the stile or sash A to- CHARLES E. STELLER. ward the glass and engage against the edge of Witnesses: the stile as it is raised. whereby the upward JAS. B. ERWIN,
movement of the arm H is arrested at right v E. Gr. AsMUs.
