' J. S. SAMMONS.
SASH FASTENER- UNITED STATES JACOB S. SAMMONS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, my
SASH FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 271,367, dated January 30, 1853.
Application filed June 12, 1882. (No model.)
10 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. JACOB S. SAMMONS, of the city and State of NewYork, have invented an lmprovement in Sash Locks and Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement is especially intended for use on railway-car windows, but may be used elsewhere. The lock is made of a hanging lever-hinged at the top, and provided with a stop to limit theout-ward movement and with a spring to press the lower end from the sash. The lower end of this lever forms the lifter,
. and there are stops upon the frame, receiving a.
latch projection at one edge of the lover. The lock is disconnected by pressing the lever toward the sash in the act of raising or lowering the window.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the sash-lock. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section at the line a e.
The sash a and window frame or casing 11 are of any desired character. The plate 0 is secured to the sash by screws 0?, and at its upper end is a hinge, e, by which the hanging leverf is attached. This leveris only allowed a limited swinging motion in consequence of the portion 2 of the lever above the hinge-pin forming a stop against the sash, and the parts 3 of the hinge also forming stops. The lever 0 fmay be pressed toward the plate 0, against the action of the folded or helical spring h; but said spring can only swing the lever outwardly to the extent permitted bythe stops.
' At the bottom of the leverf there is a bow or finger piece, 70, by means of which the lock can be availed of as a lifter in raising or lowering the sash a. At one edge of the hanging lever fthere is a latch-piece, I, that projects toward the window-frame or the stop-bead upon such frame, and upon the frame I) or stop-bead there is a catch, 112, formed as a notched block, projecting from the surface sufliciently to allow the latch to catch in the notch or against the block as the sash is raised, and thereby support the sash or look it at any desired place. The spring causes the lower end of the hanging lever to project outwardly and to engage with the catch m, and this spring yields as the. fingers are applied to the lock to unllatch the samefiand raise or lower the window. There may be one or more catches upon the windowframe. as shown at 0, for the latch l to engage with in supporting the sash.
I claim as my invention-- 7 The combination, in a sash-lock, ot' the plate 0, adapted to be screwed to the sash, the hanging leverf, and stop-hinge for uniting the leverto the plate, the spring h, latch 1, projecting at the edge of the lever, and the catch at upon the casing, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 9th day of June, A. D.
JACOB S. SAMMONS.
