BOXQFASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent hlm-739,640, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed February T0 a/ZZ whom' t 71mg] concern: I
Beit known that I, CHARLES W.. Bann-LER, a citizen of the United States, residingin the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a fastener for use upon shipping or other boxes for securing the lids thereof; and theinvention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
Figure I is atop view of 'the fastener. Fig. II is a side elevation of the fastener, the front wall and lid of the box to which it is shown applied being illustrated in transverse section. Fig. III is an elevation of the fastener as it appears in looking at it from the inside of the box to which it is applied, a portion of the box-lid being shown in longitudinal section. Fig. IV is a transverse section taken on line IV IV, Fig. III. Fig. V is a perspective view of the wall-plate of the fastener.
A designates the front wall, and B the lid, of the box to which my fastener is shown applied. The lid B contains an aperture C, positioned at the location of the fastener.
1 designates a lid-plate provided with an elongated aperture 2, located immediately above the lid-aperture C and preferably eX- tending in a diagonal direction across said plate, as seen in Fig. I.
3 is a seal-receiving lug surmounting the lid-plate 1 and provided with an orifice 4( 5 is a cam-lug extending downwardly from the lid-plate l into the lid-aperture 'C and having an inclined edge y6, that tapers from its lower end in an upwardly direction to the elongated aperture 2 in thelid-plate.
7 and 8 are centering-lugs projecting downwardly from the under side of the lid-plate 1 to enter the lid-aperture C for the purpose of properly positioning the lid-plate aperture 2 over thelid-aperture.
9 designates a wall-plate that is secured to the wall A of the box. Immediately beneath the lid-plate 1 when the lid of the box is lowered into closed position this wall-plate bears a projecting barrel 10, that contains a canoe. 190s. sain ne. matos. ou modem slot-'11. The barrel 10 is produced by bending thecentral portion of the wall-plate outwardly, so that the rear of the barrel remains open, asseen in Fig. V. At each end ofthe plate 9, above and below the 'barrel 10, are tongues 12,' that form backing for a fastenen bolt to be hereinafter mentioned, which fits and operates in the barrel 10. These tongues are designed to be bent rearwardly before the wall-plate is applied to the box to permit the introduction of said bolt, and they are afterward bent into a plane with the body of the plate, as seen in Fig. V, to retain said bolt.
13 is a fastener-bolt, the lower endofV the shank of which is fitted in the barrel 10 and carries a cam `14, that rides in the cam-slot 11 in said barrel, whereby upon the rotation of the bolt it is caused to be raised or lowered by the movement of the cam in said slot. Projecting from the head of the bolt 13 is an arm 15, that is provided with a seal-receiving opening 16.
In the practical use of my box-fastener the lid and wail plates of the fastener, with the parts carried thereby, are secured to the lid and wall of the box in the positions described, so that when the lid of the box is closed the bolt-arm 15 may be directed through the aperture 2 in the lid-plate. When the lid is closed,'the bolt 13 is in lowered position in the barrel 10 by reason of its cam let having traveled downwardly to the bottom of the cam-slot 11. The arm 15 of said bolt is strlick by the inclined face 6 of the cam-lug 5 in the act of closing the box-lid, with the consequent result thatthe bolt is rotated to carry the arm 15 laterally to the lid-plate aperture 2,throu gh which it is to pass. In such rotation of the bolt the cam 14 rides upwardly in the camslot l1, and the bolt is therefore raised, so that the arm 15 on its upper'end will beat an elevation above the top surface of the lidplate after it has passed through the aperture therein. Then the said arm is moved laterally toward the seal-receiving lug, to which it is to be secured bythe application of a seal passed through theropenings 4 and 16 in said parte. As the arm 15 is moved to the sealreceiving lug rotation is imparted to the bolt 13,' causing the cam le to ride downwardly in the cam-slot 11 of the bolt-barrei, and the loo Lil
bolt is therefore carried into a lowered position to force the lid of the box tightly to the box-walls.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a box-fastener, the combination of a wall-plate, a bolt rotatably mounted in said wall-plate, an apertured lid-plate to receive said bolt, and a cam-lug projecting downwardly from said lid-plate to be engaged by said bolt and effect rotation of the bolt, substantially as set forth.
2. In a box-fastener, the combination of a wall-plate, a bolt rotatably mounted in said wall-plate, an apertured lid-plate to receive said bolt, a cam-lug projecting downwardly from said lid-plate to be engaged by said bolt and effect rotation of the bolt, and a lug sur- CHARLES W. BEEHLER.
