UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOTTLIEB KLENK, OF DEFIANOE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLIPPER PLOW COMPANY, OF DEFIANCE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
BOX-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Iuly 6, 1905.
Patented Nov. 7, 1905.
Serial No. 268,481.
[0 al whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GOTTLIEB KLENK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the follow ing is a specificationv This invention relates to improvements in box-fasteners more especially designed for metal boxes. 4
In storing boxes having locking means on the top of the covers it frequently happens that the catches become crushed. Hence when an attem t is made to operate a fastening it requires orce to release the parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a fastening device which is flush with the top of the cover in addition to the formation of an overhanging portion which forms a grip to lift the cover. I accomplish these objects by forming a perforation each side an opening in the box-cover adjacent an eye of a hasp and secure a dish-shaped shell to the under side of and some distance from the edges of the,
opening.
The specific advantages and the details of construction of my improvement will be hereinafter referred to and be particularlypointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box-fastener. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the eye of the hasp.
The same numerals refer to like parts in all the figures.
1 represents aportion of a metal box; 2, a spring-hasp fastened to the inside and provided at its upper end with a beveled head 3, in which is formed an opening 3*.
The numeral 4 indicates a metal cover in which is formed an opening 5, reduced at its front end, as at 6. Adjacent each side of the reduced portion 6 the cover is struck up to form pockets 7, which communicate with small openings 8, and surrounding opening 5 is a slight rib 10 to form a reinforcement. A
In operation the cover is closed, the edge of the shelf 15 contacting with beveled head and forcing the same out of its path until the bottom of said head slips over shelf 15, as will be readily apparent by reference to the drawings. After the head assumes its position a seal 19 is passed through openings 8 under the pockets and through the opening 3 of head 3, the body of the seal being seated in the dished portion 14, where it is protected against accidental misplacement or injury. To open the box, the seal is broken and the head 3 is forced from edge 18 and the fingers of the operator are slipped inside the grip 17, when the cover can be raised.
My invention is extremely simple in construction and admirably adapted for the purpose for which it is designed. The construction of the shell 11 serves a threefold purposeto wit, a coacting locking member, a convenient pocket for the insertion of the operators fingers, and a pocket to shield the seal. The parts being formed of metal, they can be manufactured by stamping, which enables me to produce an economical fastener.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination, a box, a hasp secured to the box, a head on the hasp, a cover formed with an opening, and a dish shaped shelf formed with an opening, and fastened to the under side of the cover and in registry with the cover-opening, the dish-shaped shell being set back from one edge of the cover-opening to form a grip, the head of the hasp fitting on one edge of the opening in the shell when the cover is closed.
2. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head secured to the box, a cover formed with an opening, a dish-shaped shell fastened to the cover and in registry with the cover-opening, and having one edge set back from one edge of the cover-opening to form a grip, and a supplemental dished portion formed in the shell to provide a seat for the head of the hasp below the top of the cover.
3. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head secured to the box, a cover formed with an opening to form a hand-grip below the cover, and means under the cover and spaced from the edge of the grip to form a finger-receiving pocket, and a seat below the top of the cover with which the head of the hasp engages.
4. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head formed with an eye, a cover formed with an opening and smaller side openings, a reinforcing-rib surrounding the opening, and means passing through the smaller side openings and the eye in the head to fasten the cover to the box.
5. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head formed with an eye and secured to the inside of the box, and a cover formed with an opening and adjacent smaller openings in register with the eye of the hasp when the cover is closed to receive a fastening means.
6. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head formed with an eye and secured to the inside of the box, a cover formed with an opening and adjacent smaller openings in register with the eye of the hasp when the cover is closed to receive a fastening means, and a dished-shaped shell onto the under side of the cover in registry with the opening therein, and set back from the edge of said opening to forma hand-grip.
7. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head formed with an eye and secured to the inside of the box, a cover formed. with an opening and adjacent smaller openings in registry with the eye of the head, a dishshaped shell fastened to the under side of the cover in registry with the opening therein and set back from the edge of said opening to form a handgrip, a su plemental depression formed in the shell to orm a seat with which the head of the hasp engages.
8. In combination, a box, a hasp having a head formed with an eye and secured to the inside of the box, a cover formed with an opening and two adjacent smaller openings, a dish-shaped shell fastened to the under side of the cover and set back therefrom to form a hand-grip, and a seal passed through the eye of the head and the smaller adjacent openings, the body of the seal being seated in the depression below the top surface of the cover and adjacent the hand-grip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GOTTLIEB KLENK.
